Default Cheap supercharger kit: Part III

Just finished this build, so I figured I would share

For those that havent seen them, here are some of my previous builds. All focused on the fun of the build, not some mega power number. This one is no different

Now, on to the new SC. I ran across a killer deal on one of these




Thats a Techco: a short lived modular SC design. Shame the company went belly up so soon, it was a heck of a design. At its core there is a 3.0L twin screw blowing through a pair of intercoolers. Its a very compact unit, being only 2" taller than a factory LS1 intake. I picked it up cheap from the stigma from dismal numbers on the only TWO people on corvetteforum to try it and the company having gone bust. Apparently out of warranty is a big deal. Not for me and it was too cool to pass up

My L92 topped LQ4 stepped right up for the build. First I have to build a new accessory drive because most of the pieces didnt come with the kit. Only the SC and a handful of 8 rib pulleys. The SC was on the corvette spacing and I didnt have and corvette FEAD systems laying around, so I built one rather than buy. Fbody FEAD systems fit the chassis best, so I decided to emulate that






I ended up using JY parts for the system, because the SC ate a big chunk of my budget. Thats a $15 S10 alt, $20 Northstar PS pump and a $25 LS9 idler pulley I found on ebay

Next, I had to make a new neck for the TB to mount to as the original neck pushed the TB right into the radiator. The SC inlet was 3.502" where a SCH40 alum tube is just a few thousandths bigger. Im not sure where mandrel bent SCH40 tubing can be found, so I pie sliced it on a chop saw and cut new mounting flanges on the CNC router at work. The final design became more of an S than a L




Into the car we go! Original plans were to build a tub to draw fresh air in the powerbulge hood cowl



The stock tensioner bracket had a funny routing around the water neck with some pretty lame belt wrap, so I built a new one. I wasnt too confident the stock corvette tensioner would do much to fight belt slip, but its holding up so far. Belt slip seemed more related to bracket flex than lack of tension. The balancer is an off-the-shelf 8 rib powerbond for corvettes. $200 PB vs $500 IW




I built a tank for the intercooler coolant as the supplied bottle was barely a quart. The supplied heat exchanger is massive, so keeping cool should be no trouble. It had a magnacharger sticker on it. Not sure of the PO switched to a magnachered and didnt feel like swapping HX or if magnacharger supplied them with HX



I built new solid motor stands for extra clearance on the chassis. I like the stand deign because its a snap to reach all the bolts and gives tons of room


Switched the 4L80E for a Tick lvl 2 T56 and built a 31sp 8.8 to finish out the running gear. Decided to try a tunnel mounted TA and like it so far. Wish I had simply welded the bracket to the axle instead of inventing a bolt on method


Off to the tuners


A second in-tank pump and dual nozzle methanol kit later and she was completed






Not bad considering the parts. Better cam, bigger headers, more cubes/compression, ported heads, bigger balancer pulley... this thing could really scream if I wanted it to. Makes you wonder what the corvetteforum guys were doing wrong... with LS3's no less

Thats a stock LQ4 short, not even rod bolts, stock L92 heads with 918 springs. The first rect port friendly cam I could come across, my old 1.75" SSW headers. Stock techco SC pulley, stock sized PB balancer pulley

Too bad there's only three of these SCs, I really like the design and look

I like it,great ingenuity.Im looking for a lower cost way to do a blower setup for the street,looks like you found one with pretty good results,nice job.I wanted to find a ctsv-lsa engine but the prices are insane on those units.

wow , awesome numbers . I want to see some more vids and hear the blower scream . I was wondering who you had tune it , glad to see you had a reputable place do it .

I remember when this came out. looked real promising, to bad they went belly up. great numbers and great work.

I wish more SC companies would use a similar modular design. The SC itself, case, intercooler box and intercoolers are all the same for ALL Techco kits, regardless of application. Runners, TB neck and pulley snout are all that changed

Imagine if Whipple or Magnacharger did that

This 8.8 has 3.73 gears. I think the combo would be better suited with 3.08 or 3.23 gears to get more use from 1st, 2nd and 3rd

RMA performance has a good pic of the blower and intercooler box opened up. The most I did was take the runners off. Not much to see there

My screen name is a shortened version of a high school nickname. Never read any of those books. Might check them out

Throttle body is an ebay 92mm. It needed a few minor tweaks to be perfect, but at 1/3 the cost of a name brand, I was sold
