Steering rack,ball joint?

Steering rack,ball joint? Was pulling into a parking lot yesterday and all of a sudden the steering got really stiff like I had a flat or I was trying to turn the wheel with the ignition off. I got out and didn't see anything. It hasn't done it since,but I would like to figure out what it is,so I can take care of it.
Does it sound like the rack and pinion is going out or maybe a tie rod end? And yes,I have checked the fluid.
