Default 1970 GTO Twin Turbo

Picked up this 1970 GTO with plans for a twin turbo 6 liter. It was a running driving car with a BBC when I looked at it on a Friday. He pulled the motor and I picked it up Sunday. It's a pretty complete car, just needs a motor and transmission. Body and paint is a little rough, but will work for now.

Picked up a junkyard 07 LY6.

Good looking car man! Looking forward to seeing the build! Dad runs a 68 GTO. Forging up his 455 right now and topping it off with a set of ported Kauffman Racing Equipment heads. Nothing like FI, but the old man likes his NA large-displacement 'muscle car'!

The high ram is fitting for an old muscle car.

NW 102 next to a stock 90

Pulled the front end to get some room to get the motor in and start fabbing the turbo system.

Thanks. I enjoy a large cube N/A engines too, but can't afford one that makes good power. I'll stick to this turbo LS stuff for now.

Set the motor in to see how it fits. Everyone that I've seen put an LS in an A body cuts the crossmember or the oil pan, so I was prepared to deal with that.

I had tons of room. No need to cut anything. A previous owner opened up the trans tunnel and that might be why I could get the motor back far enough to clear the crossmember.

These steering arms are kind of a pain. I could have got the motor even lower, but the oil pan would hit the arms. I raised the motor just enough to clear them. It's still quite a bit lower than others I've seen.

The car came with these BBC motor mounts. I just moved them down and back on the crossmember.

Motor side of the motor mounts.

I reused the transmission mount that came with the car. I didn't like how it mounted to the frame, so I cut the ends of the mount off and welded plates to the frame to to bolt the mount to.

IT'S A BOY!!! S366 weighing in at 25.5lbs. And he has a twin.

Started mocking up the turbos. I used the hoist to ballpark the area I want the turbos.

Then I needed a way to hold the turbos exactly where I wanted them. So I made plates that bolt on to the turbo drain, then welded a nut to the plate to fit a threaded rod.

I made a jig to hold the turbos. It bolts the valley cover and allows the turbos to be adjusted up, down, in, out, forward, or backward. This let me get the turbos exactly where I want them to start building the manifolds.

With the turbos in place, It was time to start on the manifolds. I decided to use sch 10 stainless for heat retention and durability. Flanges are 1/2 inch stainless.

Making one of the merges.

I made a jig to hold the pipe at the angle I wanted to accurately repeat the cut. I made a few practice cuts on PCV until I got the angle right. Then started on the stainless.

The fitment is great on these.

Then I made a jig to true up the ends of the merge.

I shaped the flange a little to better match the turbo and the merge.

Back purged with argon.

No front runner

pieces cut for front runner

front runner tacked up

After the first 3 runners were tacked up, I took it to the bench to finish.

3 runners all welded.

Done. Just needs waste gates. I'm going to add them later.
