Default Are new valve cover gaskets necessary?

Can I reuse the valve cover gaskets after putting my heads? The reason I'm asking is because I originally did order a pair, but I just now realized I got 99+ head gaskets, when I need 98 styles, and I don;t want to have to place another order if I don't have to. jmX's walkthrough doesnt say that you need to change them, how does everyone feel about this?

As far as I know you can reuse them. I've had my valve covers off the car 3 or 4 times , never put new gaskets in...

I'm doing heads and cam soon (supposed to be done last month... but having troubles getting time off work) and I got new gaskets just cause I want everything new... but it's not required

I've had 3 ls1's and the valve covers have been off more times than I can count. I've not once needed to replace a valve cover gasket. You'll be fine.

Thanks guys. I absolutely do not want to take any shortcuts or cheap out on a $10 part, but I was looking at this 99+ gasket and it looks like its some form of poly-rubber and I can't imagine it becoming worn out or cracked, even on my 98.

Anybody want a pair of 99+ valve cover gaskets?! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />
