Default Won't start on the first crank-- bad fuel pump?

I have been having this issue for about a year now. The car won't turn over on the first crank. From a cold start, If I prime the fuel pump 3 times and then try to start the car, it will fire right up. If I just try to turn the key, it won't start until the second crank.

I remember hearing there is some kind of a ball valve that keeps fuel in the lines for easy start up-- I'm thinking no fuel is staying in the lines, and I might need a new fuel pump assembly..

Any suggestions?

Assuming you have the fuel pump trap door, put a new fuel pump sensor. Mine did the samething before my pump went out 1 month later. If it's been a year could just be that sensor acting up or something else. Good luck.

I'd hook up a fuel pressure gauge and monitor the pressure.

I guess I will get a gauge to put on the fuel rail.

So if there's no fuel pressure at the fuel rail, but it starts to build when I prime the system by turning the key to accessory, what does that mean? Fuel pump?

Change out the fuel filter first and clean off your maf sensor.

I will change the fuel filter this weekend. The car isn't using the maf because of the current tune.

My fuel filter was pretty clogued and caused the pump to have to be cycled like yours to build enough pressure to start the car

That would be awesome.. I'm replacing the filter on Saturday. I called a shop that would replace the pump for $550 (labor only). If that doesn't solve my problem I will probably just order a racetronix pump and have them install it. I'm planning on doing heads/cam/intake in the future, so I want to put a pump in that can handle the extra power. The guy at the shop said he would recommend a Walbro pump, but I seem to find more positive stuff about the racetronix.

cut a trap door and do it yourself. It's not difficult

Is the racetronix or walbro a better pump to use?

I'm not interested in doing the trap door method.

I had a racetronix in my '96 and a Walbro in my '02 can't really tell a difference. My tuner contacted me today and he tuned the car and no more cold start issue

FPA-001A is based on a Walbro pump that is specific the to 99-02 f-body cars.

its either the check valve regulator on the pump or a crack in the plastic line on the pump. what happens is after you shut the car off the system is closed and the check valve on the pump keeps fuel at the rail. if this fails or the inline plastic tube on the pump fails fuel will bleed out internally in the tank and you will lose prime

if its the stock pump i would order a racetronix pump as its good insurance and then get the new check valve. the valve is around 30 bucks and the pump is 150-225 depending on what configuration

Thanks for the help guys! I replaced the fuel filter yesterday, and the problem still remains, so I will be ordering a Racetronix fuel pump today.

Where would I buy the new check valve at?? I was thinking the check valve was built into the pump, but I guess I was wrong. Is there anything else I need to buy for the install?

What about the additional wire harness--- Do I need that?

Swap your fan relay with your ignition relay real quick and try to start it, see if that helps. My car was doing the same thing and that was my issue just to check since that can be done for free.

I'm having the same issue so I'm thinking it is the fuel pump as well.. Did you notice an increase in power when you replaced the pump? meaning is the regulator affecting performance beyond just start up? I feel like my car is slower lately than it should be but I don't know if its all in my head or if it is truly being affected
