Default starter staying engaged

Just finished an LQ4 swap in to my 02 Trans Am. Worked fine for a couple of days. Today I parked the car on a hill, rear end facing downhill, and when I went to start the car, the bendix drive stayed engaged for a second or two. I know to shim the inside bolt to adjust for this condition, but it only happens when the car is on a hill. Weak spring on the Bendix drive? I moved the car to a level area and the starter works fine. Flexplate is a stock GM flexplate. Starter is GM also.
