Default plugs, wires and curse words

Time to change my spark plugs and wires in my '00 SS. I know all you guys go crazy for the TR55's in LS's.

I already ordered some AC Delco platinum Rapidfires and they got to my house today.

I dont know what I should gap 'em at. Every website that listed them for sale said .040. I checked the forums and couldn't really find too much on ppl specifically mentioning rapidfires in their LS.

I've just got a SLP lid and SLP loudmouth 1 on her atm.

Yes, .040 is correct for OE specs.

.040" is the updated OE gap for the newer Delco iridium plugs.

The stock platinum tip plugs called for a gap of .060".

I didn't know that Delco platinums could still be ordered. I thought they had shifted all of these to iridium.

Ah -- good catch, RPM!

41-110 is the updated recommended plug for all LS engines. It should not be checked/re-gapped.

I thought I read from AC they moved from iridium to the platinum plug 41-962 in the older vehicles.

^ Reading between the lines, it says that both are suitable but that platinums are recommended for old cars so GM can be cheap and compete better with local independant garages.

Ding ding!

nonetheless, I'm very happy with the iridiums I installed when I did my long tubes last spring. The fact of the matter, though, is the use of precious metals is (AFAIK) solely for the purpose of longevity. One could install conventional plugs (which is why many default to TR55) and have no issues other than requiring more frequent plug changes.

At the end of the day, however, looking at the cost between any of them becomes a wash. One either pays more per plug up front for perpetuity, or they buy new plugs several times throughout their vehicles' useful life -- likely spending more than they would have had they just bought the iridium in the first place.

Interesting that they re-released a platinum plug after all these years. I wasn't aware of this until now. Seems like any money saved on the production of this plug would be eaten up by the additional cost of tooling/materials and storage of the separate part. I guess not though.

So I assume the proper gap range would be the same as the original platinums (.060") rather than the iridiums (.040"). When using copper, I've played with gaps from .050-.060" and found no real difference, usually settling on .055".

Yea, with my bone stock engine, my 427ci stroker and now my new 390ci. It just doesn't matter what the gap is, as long as you are somewhere between .045-.060

I saw absolutrely no difference in performance, gas mileage, response, acceleration......nothing....with all those different gaps from .045-.060.

I just do .055 for any basic LSx engine. When you start making 700 RWHP or boosting or spraying.....then gaps matter.

I can't believe that GM would take an inexpensive part off the market to gouge us for more money at the dealers' and then go back to the economical part in order to get us back in to the dealers. (So they can gouge us on other parts.) ... where is the sarcastic smiley???

Or maybe one of these:

BTW - I feel your pain. Just hope you don't have to change the Oil Pressure Sender. The scratches from that job could require stitches.

Spark plug gaping leads to spark plug installation, which leads to scratched arms from a flaming *****, which attracts Ted Nugent, which enables world domination - which means that GM can't rip ups off on spark plug prices any more. duh

... just need to figure out where Homer Simpson and Slayer plug in to this...
