Default Need help tuning this HUGH cam

Having trouble tuning for my husbands new cam.

I have it idling pretty good right now using NOGO's tune. But when he tries
to take off it just won't go, it sit there and spuders and just pokes down
the road.

I have had trouble with the PCM itself throwing out strange reading in
EFILiveV5 like the MAF reading "froze" at 107 the whole run, after pulling
the fuses for the pcm the MAF reading returned to normal. Then he got
locked out of reverse, pulling the fuses didn't help it. I finally went
back to his orginal stock file and did a fresh tune from that, and he got
reverse back and then the 02's started reading really strange, S1B1 read 4,
while S1B2 read 25, we replaced the 02 sensor with another one and now they
both are reading more "normal" reading.

I know I have the tune for the LFTF, they are averaging +12s. I just not
sure if that is enough to be causing all the spudering trouble. He has not
taken his car up past 4000 rpms since the cam install last Sat., it just
doesn't "feel" like he should.

Anyone have an ideas for me? All his mods are below. Thank-you, Becky

2001 WS6 M6

Intake mods: FRA, SLP Air Lid w/ K & N filter, Smooth bellows, GMAF, Throttle Body Bump Stop Mod, 160 Thermostat

Drivetrain: Center Force DF Clutch, Pro 5.0 Shifter & WS6 ****, 410 gears
on stock 10 bolt rear end

Engine: Comp Custom Grid Cam 245.2/249.5, 559/559, 111lsa
Exhaust: Pacesetter headers w/off road pipes, SLP Loudmouth
Handling: Strut Tower Brace, Lower Control Arms, SLP Bolt-on Sub frame
Connectors
Miscellaneous: ASP Under Drive Pulley, LS1Edit tuning, BFG Drag Radials

BTW I posted this on the LS1Edit emal list, but I just noticed it now take 3 DAYS!!! for it to post. Know wonder noone is using it any more!

Becky,

You have a very nice cam! 25* Overlap - that's confusing the O2 sensors.
Not sure what happened with the MAF - connection maybe?
Do you have a wideband?? Much easier with a wideband.
Ignore the O2s at idle - they are wrong. Rescale IFR to get LTFTs in better line. Have your hubby take it out and climb on it past 4000 and he will be surprised at the smoothness - it's on the MAF completely at that point.
What is your MAP at idle- just curious.??

How does it run above 2400 RPM - much better???
2400 - 3000 ??
3000-4000 RPM??
Does it run better as you approach 4 grand?

Thanks Joel
The map at idle is between 73 & 78. It seems to me that it spuders pretty much all the time up to 3800 rpms. That is as far as I have taken it.

You're welcome. What RPM is it idling at ? Can you post a scan EFILive??
What tables have you changed using NoGo's tune- I assume you mean his " "How to tune" post/thread . How much change in each table? Values??

Make sure you aren't leaned out at 3800, and if not, push it past 4000 and see if she smoothes out.

I have it idling at 1,000 right now.
The tune is:
Main VE table: mulitplied 400 rpms 60, 800 rpms 85, 1200 rpms 90
IAC Park Position: Raise all points from 40C and up to 21
Idle Air In Gear: All points 60C and up to 8.6
Timing raised by 5 from 400 rpms - 1200 rpms down to .52 gms/cyl and not to fall below 24*

It would not alow me to attach a EFI file on here. But I could email it to you if that's ok.

WS6 has LS6 heads? and you're using the stock timing tables as base? Did you add timing to base spark tables??
Do you have a wideband O2 setup?
Sure email me your EFIlive file.
You will probably need to run open loop at least at idle.

The WS6 has stock heads, Timing (High Octane table) in the High RPMs @ 30, the spark retard limit ithe lower-0 to 1200 rpms @24, this keeps it from falling any lower than 24 degrees at lower rpms.

We don't have wide band 02s, but looks like we might need to get it though.

I will email you his last efi file from yesterday.

might want to try switching back to the stock MAF, after my cam install it was very sluggish until 4000rpms, so I swapped back to the stock MAF and it is completly differant pulls from anywhere now.

Thanks ataylors.

What size cam are you running? I have a 230/232, 573/575, 111lsa in my auto and it is running really good with the SLP maf. Do you think it has something to do with the cam size?

my cam is small 224 581 114 +4 which is why I expected a lot more down low. And it ran real good with the GMS MAF but nothing like with the stock one. Just a thought especially since you had that little freak out already

I gree with putting the stock MA on.I had a similer problem with a car running the TREX.Cleaned up alot of it when the stock MA was put back on.Also,do you have the high octain lower rpm tables dictating the same timing as the idle table's?That will help smooth over the timing at idle.

Real good point. I'll just have to find a stock one to put back on, we have 2 but they are both ported and desreened.

Thought I would update on what is going on.

First I like to thank Bink for some really good pointers for tuning on this cam.

Turns out we had a back PCM and bad spark plugs. We will get the new PCM and update license for it on Weds and will let everyone know how it all works out. I am hoping we will be able to make it run well without going open loop at idle and low RPMs.
