Default Jittery stock oil pressure gauge...a failing oil pump?

My oil pressure gauge is very shaky and nervous looking at idol. Im not sure if i should believe it... maybe a connection is loose to the sender? It seems fine when im on the throttle.

I know the stock gauges dont truly represent anything that changes in the LS1 accurately but its never done this.

Hey Guys, I'm new to the lsx world and this forum Just Graduated from the tpi, lt1 world. I know this is a old thread but I'm having the same issue here. I searched and found this old thread My car is a 98 and has 89xxxmi's. So what can the cause be?

Default Press gauge

It's probably the sending unit and it's stuck behind the intake manifold.

I think you have to take the intake off to get to it.

More than likely the sending unit, im having the same problem on my ws6. I think i paid $38 for my oil pressure sending unit 2 years ago. To do it right your going to have to pull the intake off.

Thanks guy's. Would it be wise to upgrade the oil pump also? Is changing the pump difficult?

a shaky oil guage could also be a sign of some spun rod bearings. this goes 4 all motors. just keep that in mind if you still have that problem after the new sender is installed.

With what frequency does the needle shake at? Mine does a little too, but it jumps up and down ~5psi every couple of seconds. Not too worried about it.

my car does this too after ive ran it for a while. When i get on the gas either to accelerate nowmally or to give it a little hell it comes right up to were it should be and stays there. But it does fluctuate about 5psi every few seconds at idle.

A ton of GM vehicles, cars and trucks, have had this same problem, if the stock gauge is bouncing erratically, change the sending unit.

And Yes, the pump is difficult to replace for someone with no experience.

Old Thread I know. But my car does the same. Lq4 new rod bearings, arp bolts, trex, ls6 blah blah blah. At cold idle its around 75-80. Drops to around 45-50 at hot cruise. (6spd car) When idling its very erractic from around 30-40 ish. I replaced the pump with a ligenfelter pump and the sending unit is new(put a new one in when i put the motor in the car, because I broke it with the intake.) Im leaning towards the stepper motor in the gauge being done. Ive got a mechanical gauge ill be hooking up soon. Just wondering what people think,.

Could be a bunch of things, when does it twitch? What is the oil pressure?

Mine has twitched for 2 years between 35-40psi when at idle. New OPSU and pump, still does it. Mechanical gauge is steady.

Check with a mechanical gauge, only way to know for sure. If mechanical gauge shows good pressure, roll with it. Spend a little money and do a OPSU relocation on the car. One fitting for the block, a braided line, a fitting in the middle for a mechanical gauge to mount under the hood, another line and a fitting at the end to convert back to the threads for the OPSU. Makes changing it in the future a million times easier as it wont be behind the intake manifold anymore and youll have a mechanical gauge in line before the OPSU so even if the OPSU goes out, you still have a true reading on a mechanical gauge. I have all the part numbers from summit to build your own relocation kit or there are premade kits available. Just search for LS1 Oil pressure sensor relocation kit and youll find them.

Only at idle, pressure sits at 40 psi and just twitches up and down, once I start driving there is no twitching

I'll throw a mechanical gauge on it this weekend
