Default holley dominator 1800 pump

so i just got done installing this pump just had this thought on my mind all last night of why i had to crack the line right before the pump to let the air out . this is after i filled the tank up from being empty. i am running a fuel cell by the way its a brand new cell with a roll over vent and it has a return system. any insight will be appreciated just want to make sure this is normal

It's the same problem most all external electic pumps have - you have to prime the pump (and line) so it will actually pull fuel. As long as it never loses prime it should be fine.
