Default 12mm vs 1/2" SAE studs

Any difference between the two strength wise?
Im planing on using firehawk rims but may pick up a set of drag wheels down the road.

When I bought my S60 from Carl at CRP he strongly recommended getting 1/2 inch studs, said they where much better than 12mm ones. I went with 1/2x3" studs and have no regrets, they fit any wheel that will fit 12mm studs fine with no modifications.

Yeah, there's quite a bit of difference in strength and size. My 12 bolt has 1/2 studs and there is more thread to bite onto as well as it is thicker. My studs are longer so I had to get open ended lug nuts. Doesn't look as bad as I thought it would. They still fit my stock ZR1 wheels too. I believe 1/2" is as big as you can go and still fit stock wheels without drilling the hole bigger.
