Poor idle with TR220 > Anyone use Thunder's mail order tuning?
I made a post in the tuning section, but got one response.
I just installed a set of TEA 5.3L heads, FLP LTs with cats, a TR220 cam and an LS6 intake.
The car runs very strong, but has a rough idle. It will idle indefinitly in Neutral, but will quit after about 30 seconds in Drive.
Has anyone here used Thunder Racing for a "mail order" PCM tune along with code deletions? Did you have good luck with it? Geoff says he has done a lot of them in the past. I have already sent the PCM to them. Wish I could go there to put the car on the dyno, but its just too far.
Thanks,
Ron
BTW, I did drill the TB blade hole slightly, but was a little scared to drill it very much.

Send it to C&S Performance. They are a sponsor and all they do is tuning. They are very good they'll hook you up.

Will...
Thanks for the link, but the PCM has already been sent to Thunder.
I was trying to get a little feedback as to how Thunder's programming worked for other folks here. I was told that Geoff does the PCM programming himself.

Perhaps folks did not respond since you did not give us much in the way of details, but you probably need more air. What are your IAC counts at idle? If they are like 90-130 the IAC is overworking.

I have the tr277 in mine and sent off my pcm to tr. The idle is still pretty bad. I haven't had a chance to get it autotapped to see if there is anything I can do to fix it though.

John,
I don't have access to ATap, so I don't have a clue.
My question was kind of generic, in that I was just wondering if mail-order tuning from Thunder was successfull for other folks here.
Hey, I thought that little TR220 would idle in gear with no PCM tweeking. Not on your life!
I am really starting to think that no one companies mail order tuning is much different than someone elses. Can't tune much without wide band and a dyno. It just becomes a big
swag".
One the other hand, , I guess a company that has done A LOT of tuning would know what basically worked on the majority of other similarily modified cars, and could get real close on someone elses car.....

Something else might be causing the rough idle, that TR220 idles like stock in all cars I have seen.

Ron, slight tweak of base idle setting on TB should put you in business. Higher desired idle and more timing at idle from programming should get idle quality you want.

Fenris...
Well, it idles almost like stock in Neutral, but I guess its just to slow while in Drive.

Kinda interesting that you say that the little TR220 has poor idle, while all the LG posts say their new G5what-ever BIG cam idles as good as stock.

Mine idles good too with the stock idle speed (800rpm) but I wouldn't say "like stock". <img border="0" alt="[evil]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_devil.gif" /> Is it true that more compression will improve idle?

Hey, I only live about 30 mins south of you and I have ATAP. Give me a mail when you get your PCM back and we'll see what's going on with it. Also, I have a TR220 cam kit with 112 lsa that I am installing in my car during spring break, so I'd like to know how your idle and stuff turns out.

Yes more compression helps idle quality.More brings sweet spot down also(broadens whole range)

My heads have 63cc chambers. TEA removes some material from the 5.3L chambers in order to de-shroud the valves. With this material removed and only .003" milled to insure straightness, the 5.3 heads will then yield a 10.8 CR.
Again, this car runs very strong, just too slow idling in gear.
Hopefully, Thunder can work a little majic on the PCM and get it to idle better and maybe even get a few more ponies out of it. Hope to dyno around 385 rwhp with an unlocked converter through the cats and muffler. Good idea about increasing the timing at idle. I think it my be a little too rich while idling too, but I can't back that up with anything.
