Performance on cams
Hi,
What would be the HP and performance difference between the 224/224/114 with .563 lift compared to the 2003 Z06 cam. I have a 6 speed 99 C-5 and need to stay emm. legal and I want a smooth running engine. If the HP difference is only 5 or so I would go with the Z06 but if it close to 20 then I may consider going with the 224. Any info will be appreciated, Thanks

If you gonna go with the time to put the cam in yourself, or pay somebody else to do it, you should do the 224, you will love your car so much more everytime when you crank it up and you hear that cam loping.

If you want no lope i'd also say go with the 224 114 also. Its the one i have in my Z and wit hthe idle at 900rpms its hard to tell its got a cam. But the power gain is very good above 3k rpms. The way it pulls now with the 224, i can imagine how it would pull with a bigger cam. I'm sure i'll find out.

I've had both and the TR224 outpowers the LS6 cam hands down. Imagestation won't let me host the graphs anymore but here is the breakdown......
Mods....At the time of these numbers the car had all mods in sig minus the S2 heads and Catted Y pipe.

Well, from the specs we can make out that it's a similar configuration to the Comp mentioned before, just a little bigger. In addition, it has a prefered more milder now lift as do the existing recent ls6 cams, so I imagine it wouldn't be too brutal on springs (although there are more forces acting on that than just lift...) or lack thereof. Physics tells us that it should have less total overlap that the TR224. Lobes are the key (according to howstuffworks.com) so this spit duration you have there only tells part of the picture usually. This would in turn help with emissions if you need to qualify for sniffer at some point. Honestly a big change is not really needed to see noticeable power curve characteristics, but IMO I wouldn't mind hearing what actual owners of this cam here have to say, about the way it puts down power and it's drivability characteristics. You can learn alot from the various specs and testing that the sponsers participate in as well, so don't overlook that, as well as what friend might tell you or convince you of regarding their own cams. Ownership is a key factor in any cam installation, and only an owner can really tell you what it does. In fact someone did suggest recently that small cams don't need tuning, but I'm of the opinion that a qualified tuner can only extract more of any cam's potential in the proper application.
