Z28 Owners: get rid of the Monsoon amp WITHOUT rewiring the whole car!
All speakers in the 98-02 Z28's run through the amp. The easiest way to tell is that after you install an aftermarket head unit, no sound to any speakers will play if you pull the Monsoon. However, aftermarket amps using speaker-level inputs have a tendency to blow fuses on the system. If you don't want to run new wires, you can use the existing wiring to completely remove the Monsoon amp (located in the spare tire well) , without losing any connectivity. You will, however, lose your sail panel subs. But, since we're all going aftermarket anyway, you'll never notice they are gone.
The connector for the Monsoon amp is a 32 pin harness. The top row is E1-E16, and the bottom row is F1-16. Sipmly make the following cross connections:
Cross Points
Signal/Input (Color)/Output (Color)
Left Front Positive/E3 (Tan)/E15 (Dark Blue)
Left Front Negative/E2 (Grey)/E16 (Light Blue)
Right Front Positive/F1 (Light Green)/F7 (Orange)
Right Front Negative/E1 (Dark Green)/F6 (Dark Green)
Left Rear Positive/E7 (Brown)/F15 (Tan)
Left Rear Negative/E6 (Yellow)/F16 (White)
Right Rear Positive/E4 (Dark Blue)/F14 (Tan)
Right Rear Negative/E5 (Light Blue)/F13 (Red)
Remember to cut and cap off all unused wires, as these carry power. The power leads are at pins E11 and E12. Shorts in your system are no joke. The wiring pins for the sail panels are as follows:
E13: Left positive (black)
E14: Left negative (yellow)
F2: Right positive (light green)
F3: Right negative (purple)
Using these and an aftermarket amp, you can easily wire an additional set of speakers in your sail panels.
The entire process takes about 15-20 minutes, versus gutting your entire interior to get to the wiring.
Happy listening!

Actually, the wiring goes from the head unit, to the Monsoon amp, to the output. If you want to hook up a new amp and use the speaker level inputs, hook the input leads to the adapter supplied with the amp, and the output leads to the leads to the speakers.
If you use the low level inputs, ignore the input leads.

what is an adapter thats supplied with the amp? I will be using rca's if that has anything to do with what your talking about. what I want to do is rca-amp-output wires-speakers. will this work?

Yes, it would. Speaker level adapters (also known as high level inputs) would require the use of the input wires. RCA cables (low level inputs) would not.

i would not do it. all of those wires are about 16 gauge. if you ran a 16 gauge power wire to even a 50 watt amp you'd have problems. i'd suggest running 4 gauge, especially if you plan to run 2 amps later on (both under about 500 watts, of course). more than that and you'd need bigger gauge. it's best to start off with a pretty big gauge, cause you probably won't just stop with a sub; you'll probably add components and another amp later on. if you start with the cheaper (price-wise) 8 gauge wire and then later on want to add another amp, you're looking at completely buying a different wiring kit and a completely new install. not fun. do it right the first time.

I'm planning on getting a new head unit next week, can I use an adapter to connect to the monsson amp until I replace it and the rest of my speakers? Or should I just get a new amp and wire it to the existing speaker wires?
