Using oil after head and cam install
I am using 1 quart of oil every 1200 miles after a head and cam install. I have a catch can and the the plugs dont show any signs of oil. The motor only has 40k miles. Any ideas?

This happened on my '00 LS1 after a cam install as well, just about the same amount of oil usage. It wasn't PCV related because I too had a catch can and there wasn't nearly that much oil in it. I had no plug fouling either. I assume it had something to do with changes in cylinder pressure due to the aftermarket cam and therefore oil getting past the rings, as it didn't use anything close to this amount prior to the cam. I just let it be and the problem never got any better or worse over the next couple of years that I still had the car/engine.

Put silicon/GMS on the rocker arm bolts when you installed the heads?
AFRs im assuming the CNC job is cut into where the bolt holes are. they need to be sealed or it will eat oil.

This must be your 1st day here...........I think a better question would be DO ANY LS1's not use oil? I've owned 5 and they all used about 1 qt every 1k miles on average. If anyone tells you otherwise they are ****** liars!

My '02 was a long distance daily driver and I usually went 4-5k miles between oil changes. It was never down more than 1 quart during that period, so that's only about 1/4 quart every ~1k miles or so.

I wouldn't call them ******* liars actually. I've also owned several (4) and the only one that used anything close to 1qt per 1k miles began after a cam install. Prior to the cam, it didn't use nearly that much oil either.

Actually dckmn52 is correct, the porting will open up the bottom of the threaded holes. Most will definitely recommend using sealant on the rocker arm bolts.

This is where I was at before the heads, cam and intake. it was never down more than 1/4 of a quart between oil changes (4-5K) for the first 38K of it's life. Now if I go 5K easy driving I have to add 4-5 quarts of oil, I don't even have to change it. Just keep adding oil! It has something to do with the change.

I don't get it...all mine used at least 1 qt every 1k....every one.......most were low mileage cars too.
On a different note I had some bmw idiot following me way too close tonight on the way home. Guess he wanted to play thinkin that bmw had something for my WS6......I cleaned and oiled his finely made clock! He prolly called the dealer as soon as he got home to have his ***** oil changed.

I ran across a post of yours from a few a few months back (see below) saying that you fixed your oil usage problem?
Well the oil usage problem has stopped! It hasn't used a drop since the Envirotech cleaner was put through the engine. At the same time He put 4 ozs of Envirotech oil booster and I put the usual 3 ozs of Dex6 atf in. The rings must have been caked with carbon that bad. Another nice thing is it runs smooth cold, before this it always ran very rough cold.

Yeah it helped for a few 100 miles but it slowly started using oil again. Eff it, I just check it once a week and add oil. I think the rings have serious control issues in these engines. I'm switching to a heavier duty oil they use in trucks called Delo400 XLE, see if it helps. Right now its using a lot of oil again and I have no idea why. It runs fine, no smoking and don't smell it??????
I was pleasantly surprised after the Envirotech treatment and thought it was solved???????????????? that's cars for you, always some kind of crap wrong.
