Default SLP iron short blocks - 402 - 9.1 OR 10.5 cr

I have not heard anything else on these short blocks. I went back to the ad in Popular Hot Rodding and it said they are available in 9.1CR and 10.5CR versions, however.

It is weird that they are advertising these blocks in magazines but they do not mention them in their web page....

They used to sell a 427 crate motor but stopped at some point, at least on their website.

How long ago did you see this ad?

I don't know about SLP, but APE is building some pretty stout 408's and 427's. I'd check with them.

How about the prices of APE compared to SLP?

SLPs short block units are supposed to sell for $3,999 before any applicable sales tax to the governor...

Oh yeh - SLP also said their crank, rods, and pistons are forged...

APE's prices for the 408 seem pretty reasonable.

Robert,

I called SLP for you and left a message with Jay in their marketing department to give me a call back. Essentially what the sales rep told me is that they did a lot of promotional work to get the market excited but they don't have a lot of the sales type information available on their site yet. Yeah, no duh, I already know that part too. Hopefully he gives me a call back and we can see if they can't get you some more information on them.

I just received this information from Jay Heath, Director of Marketing for SLP. He said if there are any questions, feel free to give SLP a call and they will get you the answers you need.

Jay also indicated that the recent issue of Popular Hot Rodding has a excerpt in it. The largest article for the ZL-402 is still the one in the May/June issue of Pontiac Enthusiast.

I hope that helps.

SLP “ZL-402” Short-Block Assembly

With GM’s versatile “Gen III” small-block gaining popularity as the foundation for a wide range of high-performance engine build-ups, market demand for an affordable LS1 stroker package has become increasingly intense. In response, SLP Performance Parts has devised a revolutionary new Gen III stroker short-block assembly, one that offers unexcelled performance and durability at a truly accessible price.
Dubbed the “ZL-402” to reflect its beastly 402-cubic-inch displacement, the package is chockablock with such race-proven hardware as a new GM LQ4 block, a 4.00” forged steel crank, and 4.00” forged aluminum pistons. With the right cam and heads and a properly tuned PCM, the ZL-402 is fully capable of producing over 575 hp and a similar amount of torque in naturally aspirated form.
This package is sold only in short-block form, minus manifolds, camshaft, oil pump, and other ancillary equipment. The obvious advantage of this approach is that it allows each customer to formulate a parts combination that is perfectly suited to his or her needs. (For those who prefer “one-stop shopping,” SLP offers a host of uninstalled options on an à la carte basis.)
Although designed primarily for use in late-model F-Bodies and Corvettes, the ZL-402 also makes a superlative choice for most street-rod, muscle-car, and truck applications. Best of all, it’s sold outright, eliminating the shipping hassles, protracted vehicle downtime, and additional out-of-pocket expenses associated with core returns.
Due to high projected demand, SLP Performance Parts will only be making a limited number of these engine packages available to the media. As a result, we ask that you contact us as soon as possible to discuss editorial opportunities.

Jay indicated that they get the cranks custom ordered to their specs. That has the most to do with the actual availability date on these engines. I have to imagine that it's either Eagle, Lunati, Callies or another brand. I'm not entirely sure though.

I emailed them a while back too, I thought they told me the price would be $3499 with no core.

Does it come with any kind of warranty? If not, maybe people should think about building their own with the help of others in the know and save some $$$

Anyways, price seems good but I want to know if it comes with a warranty and what are the exact parts in the short block before I drop that kind of $$$$.

At $3,500 I don;t think you could build a short block for less....especially considering that SLPs crank, rods and pistons are forged...

July Hot Rod has a little blip about it in their new products section towards the back.
$3500 does seem pretty cheap.

Ya it does it's costing me $3300 to build a 6.0L and that's using a new factory crank along with eagle forged 4340 h-beam rods w/L19 bolts and JE pistons. Oh keep in mind these parts are AT COST as well. This also includes a NEW 6.0L block and all machining. So I find it hard to believe that you can build an ALL foged motor for 3500.
