I bought the following heads from Richie Carbone:
98 ARE STAGE II heads
2.055 1.60 valves
Comp 987 double springs
Titanium retainers
11.0:1 compression (heads milled 0.60)

And the following cam from VINCE:
226 226 .584 .584 112 +4

With 7.350 Push rods from JPR.

It took me approx. 6 months to start the heads and cam swap, 2 days to complete and only a few seconds for the pistons to hammer the valves.

I should have clayed the motor to check the clearance, but I didn't and I payed the ultimate price. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Embarrassed]" src="gr_emb.gif" />

I take full responsibility for the error.

YIKES!@# I wish you'd posted that combo on the board before you fired it up. Just by looking at the parts listed you can tell it was gonna be reaaaaaaaaaaaly close. 60 thousanths milled heads, big intake valve, .584 lift, and 226 duration is just way to close for comfort.

Ah well, live and learn. Hopefully your pistons are ok and the heads just need to be re-done a little.

I have run a setup very similar to that combo, it can be done.

Though you really should take the time to check clearance.

THNAK YOU for posting your experiance...i hope some of the "bigger is better " genre reads your post and rethinks the "max compression-max lift-killer duration" path they are pondering on going down.

Damn that sucks. I hear ya though, once you get started on it, you wanna get the thing runnin and take a few shortcuts.

I did actually try and get a sound clip of it, but it didn't work out.

I sounded alot like the Keebler elves were in the block hitting it with ballpeen hammers.

I did the same thing once, it was NOT pretty.

I wish you the best of luck, but I can tell you it's not going to be good. Hopefully you just bent some valves, but my little disaster turned into needing a new motor because of 3 cracked pistons. Definately not a pretty site after you just spent hours upon hours building the thing. Good luck though, hopefully yours won't be as bad as mine..

Where are you at in chandler. My sister live in the occitllo lake housing tract. Sorry to hear about the valves. I will be sure to clay mine before the install. I hope the damage is not too severe.

Sterling, it would really be a shame to rebuild that motor without resleeving it. I mean hell, you have to take it apart anyway, might as well make it worth your while! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

Sorry to hear it, but I think that you could saved yourself from this disaster had to posted that setup on here... You had 4 things against you...big intake valve, .060 milled heads, .580+ lift, and 112LSA... Had you gone .030 over with 2.02 valves, and a slightly smaller cam, you woulda been okay...

Oh well, at least now you have an excuse for an ARE 382!!! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

I have not decided whether I will change the cam or the heads.

The cam would be cheaper to replace, but since I can only get 91 octane 'tractor gas' at the pumps around here I am inclined to use the 5.3L truck casting ported by TEA and brng it down to 10.8:1 with stock 5.7L deck height.

the best way to describe the sound was offered by my wife, who has been in the car when the old-style ARE heads seized a valve.

From inside the car, while driving, it sounds like someone suddenly shoved a bunch of tin playing cards into bicycle spokes.

Then the engine runs like complete poopie.
