Re: Clean way to lose 70#s off the car. ;)
I just weighed my SS rear hatch at 90lbs without the hatch shocks which is a couple more. And the car looks pretty funny with the hatch off....kinda like an el camero!!?? What I'm wondering is if the fiberglass goes all the way around the lexan so there would be something to drill holes through to mount the stock brackets on. Otherwise it's pretty bolt on if you ask me.
This is what my car will look like at the bakersfield event.

Clean way to lose 70#s off the car. ;)
Laura caught wind I was thinking about a fiberglass hatch for the 2001 and put the brakes on it. Luckily she didn't say anything about project "ghetto fabulous".
Ghetto fabulous is my old 93 formula. I've been doing lots of neat weight reduction mods to it lately, and figured !hatch would be fun to try.
Here are a couple pics of the car with no hatch. It kinda looks like a Z06 from the side now. I drove it around like this for a few miles just for kicks.

It turns out the stock hatch with glass and trunk shocks weights in at 85#. It was really easy to take off. Just 4 bolts, 2 clips, and a wiring harness plug was all it took.
Here is a pic of a camaro z28 vfn hatch:

The weight of the VFN hatch with lexan should be right around 14#, so this would be a 70# weight savings.
They have a couple more pics on their website (vfnfiberglass.com). I guess you'd buy the hatch, then buy a lexan window, and figure out a way to pin the hatch on. You could probably also duct tape the hatch on if you didn’t mind loosing trunk access or looking ghetto fabulous.
The hatch sells for $250 and the scratch resistant lexan window goes for $225. I'm going to shop around and see if I can find a tinted lexan window for it.

Terry,
Do you have any new information/pics yet? Bakersfield is getting close.

The pic is up there. vfnfiberglass.com sells the hatch. I can't decided if I want my car to look ghetto to save 70#. I think I'll do a pin on hood only for now.

The hatch is a race car only type mod, forget about easy trunk access or bolt on. You'll have to weld tabs to the car to pin it on, etc. It is a lot of weight savings though.

Where do I read exactly what the rules are for bakersfield? I haven't seen anything anywhere about back seats, lexan windows...etc.
Mystic?

Hey Terry,
How many of those parts other than the hood are actually fully functional and somewhat safe to use??? It seems like you could shave a few hundred pounds off with some of the body kits in there....but I'm assuming you might get screwed in an accident.....

Re: Clean way to lose 70#s off the car. ;)
One of our guys emailed Chris Chow and I believe he said it was okay to gut the back of the car, but it had to have door panels and two seats, not necessarily stock seats.
I have Corbeau Forza II's, so if I get kicked out because of that, I'll be a little upset.
At least there will still be B1, or C3 if I can stomach spraying all day.
