Default 3000GT SL or 3000GT VR-4

I am a senior in high school. The 3000gt has been my dream car ever since I was 11 years old. Now that I finally have enough money to buy such toys, I want one!

I am not sure with 3000gt I should get. The SL or the VR-4. My father is very knowledgeable about vehicles, and he said that he would not buy the twin turbo (VR-4) due to the maintenance required on it, such as getting the turbo's tuned every so many miles.

But, I am not wanting a car that is slow. I want to be able to pull the people with their Civics and such. If anybody has any suggestions/comments, please post or email me at tequilagb@yahoo.com. Also, if you know any common problems with the 3000gt, I would appreciate knowing those too.

if the difference in price didn't matter to you, and you want the faster one, you got to go with the VR4. you'd just need to keep up with the regular maintenance of the vehicle, just like every other car. there is a lot more to be done, and to be had out of the VR4.

maybe move this to the Racer's Corner moderators?

It depends on your budget for getting a car. I wouldn't buy an SL model, they are very slow and have been known to have longevity problems..

Stating your budget for buying a car will help for everyone to give out some ideas.

I have still a 95 red 3000gt Base model My older borther had a 97sl. Performance wise, it was an auto, with borla exhaust, cat removed, resonator removed,K&n aircharger,Jacobs wires, unorthodox pulley and intrax springs and shogun body kit. It was so f--cking slow, Mine and my older borthers. A friend of mine has a 94 grandprix that runs 10.0 in the 1/8 mile and with all my mods he would put three cars on me in the 1/8 and I beat alot of 5 speed sl's and base models so tog et my point across they are slow!!!!. The non turbo is not even worth getting or trying to make fast being as heavy as they are and low power just sucks *****, looks good but slower than ****.

The vr4 would be worth getting if thats what you want, but they are quite heavy to and can be made fast but takes money alot of it.

Scroll down on that site you will see my old red 3000gt in the background, The 3000gt looks awesome but if you are looking for speed get the vr4.

Yes, that is what I have been thinking. My limit as far as just the car goes is around $10k. I believe that I will be looking into the VR-4.

I use to have a vr4 and if you get a SL you will really REALLY REALLY regret it. I can promise you everything takes a SL. As long as you keep up the Maintance there shouldnt be a big problem it has a problem with 3rd gear syncros but other than that its a cool azz car. I had a 92 vr4 electronics spoiler suspension all kinds of cool goodies

if you get one, get the VR4... cause you know you will regret it if you get the non turbo...

but on a side note.. why not get a 93-97 LT1 camaro or TA?? you can find them in good shape for 4k-10k

if you get the VR4, just keep a eye on everything.. every car requires tune ups, so tell your dad that TT's dont matter.. just 2 extra things to check

I guess I have pretty much decided on the VR-4. I do want some power. LOL. Although, it is quite hard to find a 3000GT VR-4, in good shape that has not been 'dogged' on or raced. I don't want to buy one that is nearly dead or has a handful of problems.

I don't think I'd ever buy one of those cars. The trannys SUCK and everything costs a shitload to replace! my friend just sold a low 12 sec 91 VR4 cause the damn thing couldnt stay together

that was after the motor blew and he went through a few trannies

If you want a fast car near 10k look into a 86-87 Turbo buick... those suckers will FLY, a few hundred bucks and your mids/low 12's

or what about a built fox body?

either way both cars you could find in your price range and they'd be American and be a lot faster than a shitsubishi, if i remember right Vr4's are tanks on the scale too

I believe that I am still going to purchase a VR-4. I know that there are faster cars out on the market, but if I was trying to get the fastest, I would be aiming for an Ameritech or something. I have seen 3000GT's run 10's in the 1/4 mile, and that is plenty for me. Shoot, stock they are running 13's. I have a Mitsubishi truck right now, and its held up great.

Go for the car that you want. When you look at a used car keep an eye out for hints of an accident. Even if you don't care if the car has been in an accident it's best not to pay top dollar for one that has. My experience with sports cars is that most high milage sports cars have had an accident.

Dont let someone put a doubt on which car you should get. The 3000gt is a nice looking car and if that's the car you like, well get that car. I drive a z28 camaro because I like the car. I know I could have bought a used '91 mustang and have a 10 second car for much less $, but I wouldn't be in the car I like.

Good luck.
