All right folks, this is my first kill post and most likely my last until I get beat by a LS1. After which you can expect an update. The last few months has been “getting to know” my new Viper SRT-10. Coming from an LS1/F-Body its definitely more finicky, but the cubes+T-56 combo is comfortably familiar. Tranny linkage is stiffer (slower) with positive shifts (no misses) and traction is definitely more knife edge (lots or none). Just about every other weekend I have tried planning a trip to a drag strip (nothing close either) but weather.com has been predicting “scattered thundershowers” for 2 months straight. Most of the driving has been done during normal hours with some “objective” in mind such as movie, meeting, or light shopping. Poor car has spent way too much time sitting in Chicagoland traffic using the radio and air-conditioning. Not counting my weak moments of “plinking” a few imports, timing has not been there for “stumbling across” some good street race worthy cars.

I have been tuned into ls1tech.com for quite a while and enjoy reading the posted kills and stories. In four years I never modded my SS, but reading the kills posted by the folks on this board, all modded LS1’s have the potential of beating just about everything out there (including Vipers). This makes them a dangerous animal, especially the males that mark territory with “spray”. No screwin around, first shots must kill.

Friday night was perfect, local radar showed rain moving out early in the evening. I headed out looking for LS1’s specifically and found a hive of them cruising around the airport. I picked through a few, some too angry to bother with :pissed:, some said too busted to race :|. I zeroed in on a red T/A that shot away from traffic leaving the cruising area onto a highway. I caught up, positioned right beside him and down shifted into 2nd (~55mph) and waited for a reaction. It sounded like an auto because I heard his RPMS before I saw movement, but it was a good enough start. I grabbed a car length by the time I was settling into 3rd for a strong 85-120mph pull (very tall gearing an an SRT-10). Not exactly sure how many car lengths it was when he shut down, I am guessing at least 3-4? I cant tell shit through my mirrors any ways. We stopped and chatted, nice guy. Said he had intake, exhaust, gear (+1 passenger). I asked him where people hang out “just street racing” and he did not know any that did’nt get busted up regularly.

I got on the expressway sort of heading home and I found another red T/A WS6 with soaped numbers on the windows. Traffic was heavy enough that we needed to make some room for a roll on. We paced, slowed down a bit and he offered the three honks. Again I was in 2nd (~50mph) when we started and I just ran out 2nd gear to 90mph, very short quick roll-on. Although he appeared to have a M6, he did not pull as hard as the other T/A I had just raced, guessing 2-3 car lengths? We stopped and chatted, very nice guy with a whopping 3 passengers including someone with a video camera. He was just coming back from a drag strip and listed off the same bolt-ons as the other guy. They toured the Viper and I was ready to head home for the night.

It was a fun evening and the LS1 guys who raced me were cool. Looking forward to more races with LS1/6’s including from a standing start where gearing and tires will play a role. Maybe I can find some races with those supercharged cobra’s  . . . where do they post anyways?

Good kills. Watch out for sprayed ls1s and pullied slobras. They can both be a handful.

Nice races...Srt10 huh? sounds fun. I live in chicagoland too just outside of ohare (Great racing weaher). I got a 92 camaro 305 tbi, doesnt pull quite as hard as the srt10, but im droppin in an ls1 as we speak. As for goin to the track, just head up to great lakes dragway in kenosha, its pretty nice. Maybe we can race if/when i get my car runnin lol. Go to chitownracing.com, theres alot of mustang guys there i think.

Awesome story ... one of the best I've heard in awhile. I am really astonished at how ridiculously tall the vipers gearing is ... and I can see that as almost being a downside. You would assume a more useful gearing pattern would be much more advantagous ... with 2nd gear only stretching to maybe 70 or so .... 90?!?! seems dumb.
Anywhose, being that you have owned an LS1 previously, I'm sure you will be prepared when you run by a bit more modded LS1's. Big cam, s/c'r, turbo, juiced ... any of these should give you a decent run, and would probably make for an excellent story. I am sure if you posted in your section a few of the people from your area would love to run. We seem to have a pretty lively bunch on this site, and I'm sure hangin around here is far better then any mustang site .... hehe

Btw, 92camaroreallyslow .... a 305TBI isn't even remotely in the league of pulling like a viper does ... even a decently modified one. I do like the fact that you're throwin an LS1 in there tho .. and would love to hear what you plan on doing mod wise (internals, etc) to it.

He won't have to do much modding. In that 3rd gen i hear times of mid 12's to high 11's with LS1 drop ins. Wish i could have done that to mine. I have an 87 IROC as well as a 2001 SS.
