POLL: Lexan/Plexi replacement glass for weight reduction

Re: POLL: Lexan/Plexi replacement glass for weight reduction
I would pay 400 for all three without a doubt, however I'm in Texas and I'd rather go to you to see it first, but that's not possible. Buying this shipped to my door would be pretty high risk. If a lot of people are doing it, say more then 10 then I'm in without a doubt. How much would shipping cost?
Would installation be difficult?

Re: POLL: Lexan/Plexi replacement glass for weight reduction
Terry Burger,
Like I said, I haven't made these prototypes yet, but I was an auto glass mechanic for 3 years. I know what these pieces weight. The backglass on the last syle Firebird weighed 80 lbs., a plexi piece to replace that would be about 12-15 lbs., a savings of 65 lbs. or more, the door glasses about 10-15 lbs. each, plexi, I guess would be about 3-5 lbs. The T-Tops, I would guess about 10 lbs. each saved because they're pretty thick. I had this idea back in 1987 when I owned an 87" GTA T/A and was an auto glass mechanic.
AlienDroid,
Shipping would be approximately $30.00 UPS ground anywhere in the contiguous U.S. If this happens, I will be sure to install these pieces on a car, take pics and video (parked, driving, high-speed, rolled half-way down, etc). If it's really showing allot of interest I'll probably sell it through a couple sponsors so they'll also be a testimonial for customers. And, I won't sell it under my name unless it's a rock solid product.

I voted to do it but it would not be right away.. I'm thinking in the future. If would be another item to add to the list along with the 12 bolt, clutch, headers, head/cam package, injectors.. Well you get the point..

I weighted the complete rear hatch from a Firebird and it came in at around 80#. The rear glass makes up approximately 1/2 of that weight.
I've done a lot of research on hatches lately, I even made my own out of wood and plexiglass.

I have a rear lexan window brand new in the box for sale that I never used. It is for 93-03 F-bodys.

Who makes them, if someone already makes them I won't.
How much do they sell them for new?
Do they make door glasses?

I forget who made it, somewhere in the northern states.. I bought it over a year ago for $450 and I'm looking to just get my money back.

oh, it all makes sense now. How does it look by the way? Does it install into the seal, or do you have to rivit it in? Also could you even tell it was lexan if it was tinted? Thanks

POLL: Lexan/Plexi replacement glass for weight reduction
First, I have NO exact weight savings yet. So the poll would be best at this time for me to say: Figure a total weight savings of 70 lbs. replacing the door glasses and the back glass.
Second, I have NO hard prices yet. I'm not going to do this to make a killing, I'm going to do this to contribute to the performance enthusiast. So, figure a price of $400.00 for all 3 pieces of Plexi/Lexan.
This is the first step to making this reality.
PLEASE, only vote if your serious, if this goes forward it will be my investment money, so it needs to be accurate.

one thing you guys have to take into consideration is what safety rules goes with running the glass
i know on the side windows you are supposed to use hard line around the window for some reason
my friend with an 9.7 all motor 3500lb chevelle explained it to me but just dont remember

Man, I know of so many other weight saving items on F-Bodies and Vettes that it's unbelievable.

The window will have to be riveted in. It is not tinted, but if you did tint it would be hardly noticebale unless you walked right up to the car.
Rear lexan is usually legal in most classes... Now side windows is a different story

The backglass that I would produce will be installed EXACTLY like a real piece of glass would. Tape kit and urethane.
The doorglasses will go in using the same hardware that's in the car right now.

There's no question about it. If this happens the plexi/lexan will come either from a mold or they will be heat formed right over the real glass.
