My friend has an auto 2000 Z28, we were playing around and could only get up to about 115mph, then a govorner kicked in. WTF? Do Z28s even have factory govorners? If so how do you take it off?

yes they do. not sure on the mph though but it will kill the fuel when you hit it. i was sure that it was more then 115 though. on an auto, you have to get a programer. if you had a M6 you can just cut the wire from the VSS to the PCM but leave it hooked up to the speedo so you can still read it. if you do that on an auto, it will not shift correctly. eather way you will get an SES light since the PCM cant read the speed. a programer is the best way, and wont give you an SES light.

u sure its not a V6, because they have a govenor at 119. to my knowledge autos are govenored at 155 just like m6s. never had mine over 125 so i couldnt tell ya where mine is.

Theres no possible way its a V6, its has the correct Z28 badging, and the LS1(yes weve looked under the hood) also the stock duel exhaust that the V6 does not have.

Thanks any suggestions on certain programers?

I have had my to well over 120 before. I have always understood it to be that the Z-28's cut off at 157 mph.

Some autos didn't come from the factory with z rated tires, hence the cutoff. I thought that ended with the LT1 days though??

If it doesn't have the RPO QLC, then it'll be governed. QLC means z rated rubber.

nope it goes all the way up to 2002. if you didnt get the Z rated tires the govenor is set at 118 on both cars M6 and A4. you need a programmer.

if the speed govener is all you want to change, get a hypertech tuner. if you have a laptop already and want to do other mods in the future, get LS1EDIT. theres also the predetor and others but it is up to you.

Get the power programmer and set your speed limiter to ZR. Here in Germany I have got my Z28 at 262 km/h (162.7 MPH) on the Highway. :)

yah i almost shit myself when i had it on the dyno the first time around and it kept hitting what we all thought was the rev limiter 1/2 way through 3rd gear...but in reality it was hitting the top speed limiter @ like 4000rpms in 3rd hehe gotta love 2.73's :bang:

The LS1 edit has passed through our minds, but we dont know much about it. Do you or anyone else have a website where we can read about it and buy it?
Thanks

If it didn't come with the GS-C's then it has a limiter. He should also have 2.73 gears (will need a new carrier if he changes them) and a steel driveshaft (heavier) vs. aluminum.

if you don't feel like looking up rpo codes, look at your tire pressure sticker. If the factory tires are 235/55/16 then you've got the lower speed, 245/50/16 you get the 145 or whatever cut off. And obviously as everyone else said, the 245s are Z-rated

My 2002 Z28 came with GS-C Eagles. HPTuners shows the limiter set to 257 KPH = 160 MPH. I have seen 5200 RPM in 5th gear on Highway 50 in Nevada. I couldn't look at the speedometer because it seemed important to keep my eyes on the road. It was easier to peek at the tach. 5200 in 5th with 3.42 gears is approximately 155 MPH.

I was clocked at 176 by the Bell CO. Sherrif's dept. here in TX.
Does that help?

i dont have a Maro...but wouldnt it only reach mayb that speed if you have it in DRIVE instead of OVERDRIVE....overdrive hits quite a bit higher bcuz instead of 3 gears its 4

My 98 shut down at 148 untill I unplugged the wires from the transmission.
Now the friggin annoying skip shift crap is gone, plus I can pull the speedo off the scale.
Tires have ratings for a reason. I am running 17 inch Z rated yokohamas
Blowouts suck at 150+ !!

Yeah I think the 2.73 gear non z rated tire cars from the factory have a governer at 115-120. Im not sure if it cuts off at 115-120 with 2.73 gears out back but I know if it didnt have z rated tires from the factory they would not go over 120.

When I was looking to order my car, a salesman told me how a friend of his bought a Z28 from him, and when it came it, it didn' t have the Z-rated (GS-C) tires on it. They thought they could throw on a set of Z-rated tires and appease the customer. Well, his friend picked up the car, but soon brought it back, asking why it was shutting down around 120. The salesman contacted a GM rep to inquire about this issue, and was told only 10,000 Z28' s per year came without a speed limiter in the computer.
Ofcourse not all sales people know shit about cars, but I found this information helpful. From what I have learned, if a V8 F-body did NOT come with the Z-rated tires, it was limited to 118MPH. The same speed as the V6 cars. If the car DID come with Z-rated tires, fuel shut-off is at 162 MPH. For those of you who say your cars shut down at 148, 155, etc. maybe there is another factor. Are your cars convertibles? My 01 Z is equipped with T-tops, and while I haven' t hit fuel shut-off yet, the car has seen every bit of 155 and was still pulling.

I thought the z-rated tire limit was set at 162 mph. And of course the non-zrated around the 115 mark or whatever. My 2.73 geared, z-rated tire A4 has gone 155 with a little more left in it. That was with new BFG rubber, not my bald stockers, but thats beside the point.

I bought a new MMM Z/28 back in 01 and it came with the 235/55 r 16's. they were only t rated tires and the computer was calibrated to them and the car would shut down at 118.

You realize this thread was from 2004 right?
The speed gov is based on stock tire ratings. 115mph or so for non z rated tires and 162mph or so for z rated.
If you want to remove the gov, then get your vehicle tuned.
