There is this older guy with a 98/99 C5 vert that thinks his car is just godly. He just threw on a Bassani exhaust as well, so now he thinks it's extra special. I've been wanting to run into him for some time now, and I got the chance last night.
I was cruising with my buddy who is home from the Air Force, and I see this C5 zip past the other way. I pulled a u turn and I ran after him. I catch up to him, and goosed it a couple times so he knew I wanted to run (I can't throw a rev because you can't hear the stupid stock exhaust). We're cruising about 40 and I hear him down shift and nail it. I throw it into 3rd (don't know why I didn't go for 2nd), so he gets the jump on me. We're dead even though through about 110 when I start to pull on him. I had about a half to 3/4 of a car on him by 130 when he shut down.
We get a light, but he won't even pull up next to me! I look back and he looks all pissed and bitter. I throw him a thumbs up, and he just looks so pissed. The light turns green and he gets on it again. I reamed on it then, and pulled on him real quick through first before he backed off.
It felt good to piss him off. Eat that Mr. Vette. :jest: Good thing I live in an area where no one mods anything.

You've never been to north central Pennsylvania have you?
Not much to hit out there except deer and possums.

Stock exhaust means most likely the rest of the car is also stock :eyes: .....and you beat the same exact motor in a vette that weighs ALOT less :secret: . I guess anything can happen in street race and I would bet the vette was auto(sucks for street) and you had a 6spd(strait up rules)
When my vette was stock I was almost even w/ cammed Camaro from a roll(45 up).

His mods are listed in his sig, and he did mention the vette was an auto.
:eyes:
Stock C5's, while really nice, aren't exactly the end all be all. Of course they weigh less, but then again you must have realized it was a convertible and that takes care of some of the weight difference.
BTW 98-98 is not the exact same engine configuration as a 2000.

Also figure some power gobbled up from your IRS ;) Also my car was 3540lbs raceweight, nothing removed and 1/4 tank gas. If a (C5 Coupe Curb - 3,245 lbs) 200lb driver is in the C5 your looking at a pretty small weight difference and HP should be relatively close (it could go either way). A cammed LS1 vs a stock LS1. Hmm... 300lb weight advantage and aerodynamics arent enough to make up for a cam unless something wasnt right. ;)
Good kill btw!!! I love it when a vette owner goes down, sometimes they think their vette is king of the hill.. stock, its always good to give them a dose of reality. ;)

C5s are still a handful for most stock SSs and looking at DMNSPD his car is almost stock. I think if the C5 had a M6 it might have beat you but good job anyways. It's fun to look at those C5 owners look stupid when a SS/WS6 beats them.

Here's the details that I know of on the Vette...
It's got 97-99 wheels. It's a droptop. Using those clues, i'm guessing it's a 98 or 99 (no vert in 97).
The only mods I KNOW it has is the Bassani exhaust and some sort of programmer (he says it's got a "chip". I'm assuming it's probably a Hypertech).
It IS an auto.
I don't see what's so doubtful about a f-bod LS1 running a C5. Sure, I'm only running 13.3 @ 107, but I've never seen a C5 run that quick around here. I really think my car runs better than it should. It just hit 16K miles, so that might have something to do with it. My 13.3 is on a 2.2 60' though, so that only means the car is capable of being quicker, I just need to launch better.
I've had luck with my LS1's though. My 2001 Z28 went 13.0 @ 111.6 with just a loudmouth, slp ypipe, free mods, predator, and drag radials... and that was on a crap 2.1 60'. It definitly had 12's in it... and with that mph, i'm thinking closer to mid 12's.
Anyway... I also had a 225lb deficit with my buddy riding shotgun. The Vette guy (his name is Andy) was riding solo.
And as far as going 130... it was 10:30 at night with no one on the road but Andy and myself. Still, going 130 is stupid and unsafe, but I couldn't pass it up for this race.

The Corvette convertibles actually weigh a few pounds lighter than the coupes do.

I raced a Y2K vette w/ a magnacharger and long tubes with my current setup (see sig.)
I don't know if the guy couldn't put the power down or what, but he got walked hard by my 00 Z M6. The guy caught up to me at the next light and gave me that oh-so-satisfying :eek2: look with the token "whatcha got in that thing???!?! comment. I also raced a stock red C5 at the track and he got a faceful of taillights. I really don't think stock C5 vettes (read: not Z06) are too good for drag racing b/c of the IRS, but they'll eat most F-bods in the twisties.

My friend in his dads ZO6 topped it out at 173 on a two line road here. :) Two lanes as in one going each way... I always make sure to tell him how STUPID that was.

So I talked to him today...
I said thanks for giving me a nice run. He says to me "oh man, your car is just insane fast. It has to have a bunch done!" I said, nope, it's pretty much stock except for an intake." He was kinda bittered about that. He then said he's bought this "chip" that he can change stuff, and I should try it. I'm guessing he's got a hypertech.
So anyway, that's that. He was pretty cool about it. He didn't have any excuses, which was cool. He seemed so humbled by it though! I feel kinda bad lol oh well...

Nice kill. Just to add a little here, my C5 with just a filter ran a best of 13.1x@111.xx. Exhaust will buy the guy zilch. Stock C5 exhaust flows fine. The curb weight is about the max an optioned out coupe should weigh. Mine weighed ~3150 with 3/4 of a tank. One of the mods on this site weighed in at 3090 with around a 1/4 tank. He also ran a 13.1x with just a filter (our cars were neck and neck the entire track when we raced). And judging from the dyno's our IRS doesn't eat up much more power. Probably another 5rwhp/tq. My C5 seems to launch OK. Its 60ft times are more the fault of the driver than anything else. No C5's aren't godly and I've seen F-body tail lights at the track and shown my tail lights in return. But just be aware that with a good driver you can have your hands full real quick. Oh and besides the M12 tranny gearing and the extra power, there isn't any inherent advantage to a Z06 vs a standard C5 in a drag race. Again DMNSPD good kill.

Mid 70's vs. 90 degrees with high humidity. Converted for altitude that 12.7@113 comes out to a 12.3@118. But I'm not going to put a corrected time in my sig. FWIW a blown LT1 car from our group only managed a 12.68. I think he's ran a best of a 12.3 or so. The conditions sucked. But it was the only test and tune we made it to after I put in the cam. I have yet to make it to the track with the current mods (added heads and clutch this season). Its rained every weekend we've tried.

That is quite a confusing statement. You can throw a little weight in there also. Mine weighed in just south of 3050. But hell, they are ONLY about .8 seconds faster and trap about 9mph faster in the quarter, but besides that, they are pretty much the same. :jest:

I'm glad I checked out this forum tonight. I lost to a C5 over the weekend. Mine was on the highway from 70 MPH though. I'm unsure on whether it was quite fair. We had been playing cat and mouse for a while. I got up front and he had to get behind as we passed some traffic and then just as he could get around the traffic he gunned it and got in the left hand lane and I was on it probably a second later. Anyway, my front bumper was probably 3 to 4 feet away from his back bumper when we leveled out, just before we had to brake for traffic. That was my first time to mess with a C5 so I didn't know what to expect. I'm thinking it's normal for my stock machine to take a loss to the car, especially on the highway. Win or lose it was definitely worth it for the adrenaline rush I got. Can't wait 'till I'm beating up on the C5s, Z06s, snakes, etc. I hope that day comes at least. :jest:
CHEERS!!

Damn I totally got mixed up between two posts. Anyway, you beat the car. Congrats!!! I wish I would've faired that well. I got this kill story mixed up with the death story of Silk98z's to the Cobra driven by the senior citizen. In realization that you beat the car though I'm wondering if I should've done better against the C5 in my race. Oh well...

Flynlo I was responding to the previous post in which the author seemed to think there was something chassis related to the Z06 that made it a better drag racer. I was not downplaying the advantages of 50hp, a little less weight, and better gearing. I was merely stating that there is nothing structurally that makes a Z06 inherently better than a vert or coupe at drag racing.
Dmspd I would have liked to have seen more of a gain with headers and a cam as well. Unfortunately we went on the last day of the season hoping for cool temps and didn't get it. It could have been worse I guess, one of the cam/header WS6 guys didn't even break a 12. Don't think he didn't get a lot of shit for that.
