Air Lid & Fernco Question
Ok first question. I want to get a clear lid, which means only MTI and TSP. I was under the impression that all of the lids will give you about the same power gain, and still pretty much am, just wanted peoples opinion on that. MTI has a GM performance tech article or something linked off their intake page that compared 7 lids to each other. These are their dyno results for the parties I'm interested in.
Stock Car 320 hp 333 tq
MTI 325 hp 336 tq
TSP 332 hp 341 tq
So according them, there is a performance difference between the two. So my questions, does anyone have anything to prove power increases with either of these brands? Does anyone have comments about how well they fit, ease of install, etc?
I would probably just get a TSP one but right now MTI has a deal for clear lids at $99, which is $30 cheaper than the TSP. That is why I'm considering the MTI one now.
And my Fernco question. According to JRP (thank you) and his Newbie mod guide thing, it says you can pick up the Fernco at Home Depot or Lowes.
So I need a 3 inch by 3 inch peice of tubing, in the plumbing depertment? What are these things actually referred to as? Piping, fixture, etc. so I don't have to search all the place and can just look at a section.
Thanks guys.

I thought the Fernco replaced the accordian looking tube going from the Throttle Body to the MAF? So why would it matter if it fit on the MTI lid?
And you can still do the fernco mod without having a aftermarket lid, correct?

The air bellow can be replaced without replacing anything else, correct. It connects the TB and the MAF. I would recommend against Fernco (drainpipe) because it is so stiff it sometimes breaks your air lid (which is just on the other side of the MAF). Saving $20 on the air bellow won't feel to great when it breaks your $120 air lid. I would go to www.airflowonline.com for an air bellow. They are $14 and flexible (funny, they look exactly like what SLP sells for $50).
As for the lid, I've seen a few studies that say one is better than another. The problem dynos arn't that accurate. A difference of 5 hp could just mean your car is a little warmer. What they need to measure is CFM, which to my knowledge no one has. Just looking at the designs, I would imagine that DirectFlo and TSP are the best ones, but I would be suprised if they would have any measurable HP advantage to the others. TSP also offers an 85mm version.

Thanks for the website, if I end up getting one I'll probably get one from there. I was worried about the stiffness of the fernco one breaking something since it won't move at all.

Oh yeah, so I am right in that it needs to be a 3 by 3 peice of connector right, because I went out and measured my MAF and throttle body connections and it looks bigger than that, around 3.5 inches to 4.

the fernco I dont see gaining you any real power.. not anything that should be noticeable.
On the dyno (RSI) I was able to prove on two different occasions that the K&N (and cotton gause filters), the Amsoil (Foam filter media) and no filter lost 3rwhp on the dyno repeatedly...
The standard paper filter makes the most power hands down..

Ok, took the accordian type thing off the car so I could measure the connections. Where it connects to the MAF there is a diameter of 3.5 inches. Where it connects to the Throttle Body there is a diameter of 4 inches. So since that's the case, how is it that a 3 by 3 peice supposed to fit onto this?

Your saying the k&n, amsoil, and no filter at all , lost 3rwhp compared to the paper filter?
I have heard that the oil from the k&n messes up the maf. I like the way it looks in my clear lid and 3hp wont gain me a tenth. I suppose that defeats the everybit helps but oh well.

This black rubber "bellows" adapter connects a 4" air pipe to a 3.5" air pipe.
Very similar to a hose used in some Chevy Camaro and Corvette applications.
Overall length 5".
Is this what I need? It has the same size fitments that I measured, but what I'd like to know is why my MAF and Throttle Body have different diameters than what people on here say to get sizewise for a smooth bellows?

makes no sense to say a paper filter will flow better then no filter............

yes, the 3' - 3' is what your looking for, i was confused at first and it might be sort of tought to get on the first time, just make sure to use the microwave to make it more plausable, and dont burn your fingers. that rubber gets firggin hot!
