Default Best advice for hooking on a not so sticky track??? PLEASE HELP!!!!

Heres the story....

I race on Friday nights at a track and the prep is marginal...they don't waste much vht on street night. And its around 2000 ft and the da last night was around 3000 if that matters (just trying to give all the details so you guys can help me better)

And the class I race in requires Street tires.

So heres my combo....

98 ta, 3.73, tp4400, slp LT's/ORP, bolt ons, 3270lbs with me. Front sway bar as well as most anything not needed is removed off front end.

My suspension is completly stock..and its a t top car. I'm running 26x11.5x16 et streets on take offs wheels, convo pro skinnies in the front.

I ran last night and got a best of 7.71@90 with a 1.72 60ft.
60's and et's ranged from the best to an average of about 7.9 & mid 1.8 60's.

The car tries to leave hard but it just feels like the whole car is just being overpowered and twisting all over the place. It hits hard and I can really feel the body twisting. It spins for about 10-15 ft out but its a violent 10-15 and is all over the place. Tried tire pressure from 15 down to 10 (tires started walking bad on 10lb...won't try that low again). Oh yea...atap showed 4 degrees of knock throughout the run. Whether it be 100 octane or desinsitsation via ls1edit that problem will be corrected later in the week.

Hal shocks/spring and right rear air bag will be installed before next Friday. Anything else you recommend and will the hals help much? Also what is a realistic 60ft- 1/8 mile et to shoot for with my mods.

I have heads and cam waiting to be installed but this is kind of fun tinkering with the stock setup. Figure if I can't hook stock it sure won't hook with an additional 100 ***** so might as well solve the problem now.

Thanks guys for any responses.

The Hal Shocks will assist greatly in getting better traction at the track. I would advise getting the Hal shocks front and rear. Also, I have been down the traction road before. For the current mods you have, settings of 1 to 3 in the front should be your base and on the rear settings of 2 to 3. Try to always have a stiffer setting on PR for better torque. After the H/C combo- the settings will go up alot higher because of the power you will be making. Settings on the stock will no work with the additional H. Power. I now this sounds simple, but I learned from experience and advice from this forum. My sixty foot now is in the 1.60 range. I just achieved this last Saturday. I hope this helps. If you have any more question--just ask.

I agree go with the hals we have a not so friendly track here as well and the Hals have been keeping my 60's in the low 1.6's

Kent,

Are you saying to go with a higher setting on the fronts once you add more HP?

Is there such a thing as too much squat? I'm having traction problems right now. I run my fronts (have hal springs also) at 2 and really "squat" like hell but still spin.

The track that I ran at last weekend is not the best to hook up. I found that if I set my Hals in the front at 5 and the rears at 2 was the best. 5, 1.57 60 fts in a row. When the fronts were set at 2 the car would lift the front end, then drop, then come back up. For my Hot Rod on so so tracks needs the 5 setting on the fronts.

I hope this helps you out.

For additional H P on my car at my local track, I meant the rear hal's need to be set at a higher setting. On the rear I set my DR at 6 and PR at 9 and the sixty foot time went down a little more than half a tenth. The front hals were set a 2. With all of these settings--the car launch straight as an arrow and no swaying or twisting off the line. Experiment with the different settings on the Hal's and sooner or later you find that sweet spot with Hal's, air pressure in tires, proper burnout (lonnnng on Nittos)and proper RPM launch. Best wishes and go get that new ET. Kent.

if you cant hook, you want more squat

just learn not to push the go pedal so hard pratice on the street accelerating without spinning. maybe with TC on so you can tell. then take your newely learned skills and mimic them at the track

-Twisting is bad, better get subframes your car can show signs of cracking the floorboard after a year of that.
-It's frustrating to dial in a setup. You need a spotter to watch your launches, and let you know if you are spinning and how much.
-Track conditions vary. If the VHT isn't applied sometimes out say 200 feet you might have cars breaking the tires loose like 100 feet out, it's not the Hal/QA1 drag shocks' fault.
-If you do rear QA1's you do not need a rear air bag as much since you can stiffen up that shock.
-Keep in mind that stock shocks are like 50/50, so a QA1 setting of 5/6 is like stock.
-I'd try the front QA1's at 2/2 (loose) to start, and go from there. I would not run the ET Streets lower than 15psi. If you break the tires loose, they are too old or the track prep is not that great. You don't make enuff power to really overcome your suspension unless the track prep blows. In that case you might need to hold the gas at 1500-2000 and roll out really fast so as not to shock the tires so hard off the line.
-My best 60 ft is a 1.51 had the front QA1's at 1/1 and the airbag at 20psi.
-Interestingly, I did not realize that a 1.54-1.55 was actually me spinning 4-5 feet until I had a spotter at the track.
