Here are a couple pics of my new light weight carpet. It was ~$20 from home base, and pretty easy to install. The stock carpet+insulation came in at ~36# total. The new carpet comes in around 6#, for a 30# weight savings. The car is louder inside, but not much. The car is about the same volume inside now with the windows up or down.

That looks pretty good, Terry. I played around with doing my own "custom" carpet when mine burned up and had to be replaced. I got the front section to look pretty nice, but no matter what I did, the rear seat area looked like ****. I gave up and bought a cheapo aftermarket carpet from Year-One that fits pretty well and looks OK. It's thin as hell and has no backing on it to speak of, so it's much lighter than the factory stuff. I never weighed it before installing it, though...

The install looks pretty good. Can a person just replace the original carpet with the light carpet but keep the sound deading material but yet save some weight.

No. Swapping the carpet is for hard core people only IMHO.

kent, the sound deadening stuff is where most of the weight is. If you want to save weight, your best bet is to remove all the factory stuff and replace the carpet.

Chris ARE 360 is cutting rhe rear section, and keeping it in except for race day. I may do the same, since a lot of noise comes from the rear.

I have a friend that does professional car upholstery, and he found me really nice lightweight carpet (around 8 #'s for the whole car). It's nice stuff, not like indoor-outdoor "astro-turf". He says it will look completely stock when he's done with it, although it'll be louder.

ONYXSS-Thanks for the reply. This gives me two options to think about. Never would have thought of taking out the rear carpet on race day. Excellent idea. Very impressive times your car runs. Again, thanks for the reply.

I think there is a spray in Sound Deadener that you can buy and spray it on the floor pan and the cover it. I think I saw something of this sort in Crutchfeild(I may be wrong. I will check and make sure.)

That should cut down on some weight(IMO). He11 its worth a shot right??

Yea, Crutchfield also sells a lay-down sound deadener made for speakers. But very pricey.........

If you have a quiet exhaust the noise really isn't that bad. I'm very sensitive to extra cabin noise and don't mind !insulation much.

I yanked my carpet out today and removed just the backing. It saved some and every little bit helps. Its a lot heavier than 6lbs though. I couldn't believe how heavy the entire peice was when I first removed it.

It seems that I lost almost 20lbs removing the backing and anything else I could find. I had the entire inside of the car out today so I waas able to find a few little things here and there that i didn't see a need for <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

congrats on the install <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> I got bored yesterday and riped out my carpet and took out all of the backing <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> then the inner fender wells, cruise control , and the bumper supports <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" />

What you can also do is install it in two sections (Like my backhalf carpet)

You can also buy that dynamatt sound deadening to put behind the rear seats and in the trunk area... That quiets things down a LOT!

I am going to pull the front half of the carpet, remove all the sound deadening and put it back in. Then have the back half of the carpet totally removable at the track only. It will look totally stock and weight about 5 pounds vs 36+ pounds in race trim. I am also getting rid of all rear seat belts etc but keeping the back seats/full carpet/dynamatt in for street use. Then just pull the seats at the track.

I'll get some pics of the back up soon, it looks decent. The truck is keeping your stock rear seat cushions. They add almost no weight and make the car look much nicer.

When i yanked mine to remove the padding I could believe how heavy it was then I hosed it down and cleaned it real good before I put it back in. You can't believe how heavy that thing is soak in water. Think it weighed more than me <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" />

I did the same thing before I left on vacation.

I got some 3x6 sections of carpeting from Autozone, and some spray adhesive.

I used the spray adhesive to keep the carpet tacked down...

I only covered the front floorpans.

It's now as loud inside as it is outside.

I have shorty dual exhaust and it's hmmm pretty loud LOL.

But the total weight savings is most likely over 30 to maybe 45 lbs.

I planned on doing it that way. Bought the carpet, tried to lay it, and it didn't look as clean as the stock. So I have it the way Chris described, stock carpet, in 2 pieces. I plan to put the Dynamatt on the carpet in the back section, that will get removed when in race mode. Alot cleaner, & quieter. When the back half is removed, the remaining carpet wont weigh over 10 lbs.

But, whatever floats your boat.
