Drag race hood weights...
Project Dragula rolls around with an ASCD WS6 hood, which supposedly weighs close to stock, so I am guessing over 40 lbs. I got this weight from Speed Inc. about a year ago.
Now, I keep torturing myself with the idea that I could put on a lighter hood and drop some MAD weight off the nose of the car.
I called up www.VFNFiberglass.com for like the 20th time and Frank indulged me again.
They offer two hoods for Ponchos.
A stock appearing hood that is a pinon, and one that bolts on like stock. Stock style is 22 lbs. The pinon is like 12 lbs. the bolton hood is $350.
They also offer a 4" hood that is pretty ugly. It's $450 and 24 lbs in bolton. I don't know what the pinon weight is.
Since I have no interesting in going pinon, I would save about 18 lbs.
But if you went pinon you could drop over 30 lbs off the car just from the hood, not including the weight dropped from removing the hinge assembly and hood latch.

Re: Drag race hood weights...
I used Dzus fasteners to put on my hood.
The hood is a stock Z28 piece. It wieghs about 14 lbs.
I lightened it up a bit. And it only cost me 50.00!!!

Re: Drag race hood weights...
My hood is a VFN liftoff, stock style formula hood.
They made a mistake, and sent me a hood for the pro-mod fiberglass body.... ( ie... a couple feet too long )
The John Harrison at Specialty metal craft made the hood work...since its shaped front to back, he chopped of the extra length. And removed the rear glassed in brace at the same time. Did a real nice job on the hood, and fastners!
My hood weighs under 10 lbs now.

Re: Drag race hood weights...
Anyone know the weight difference between a stock GM firebird hood and a ASCD WS6-style hood?
Just curious.

Jason, I think they are within 5 lbs of each other, but it's hard to part with the look.
I could prototype a 4" WS6 style hood with Glasstek, but I would end up ruining my hood in the process for a one free hood, not worth it to me since I have a G into my current hood.
I might buy another hood by the end of the year and run it for some events.

I'm going to order one of those flat pin on hoods. I wouldn't mind some light weight front brakes too. The combination would shave around 70# off the front end of the car.

Re: Drag race hood weights...
I was told the shipping weight on the bolt on VFN Firebird hood was 18 pounds. So I guess with hinges etc it would be 22 pounds total.
Stock steel hood is close to 50 pounds.
approx 30 pounds savings is pretty damn good me thinks
Let me see...
VFN hood (30) with front bumper support (21)and
!ABS module (10), dynabatt (18) = 79 pounds off the front cheap and easy
That doesnt include K-Member, A-Arms (44 pounds)
weight reduction is cool!

Re: Drag race hood weights...
The VFN bolt on hood is ~25#, and the pin on hood is ~13#.
I took my stock 2001 Z28 hood off today and it came in at ~47#, the brackets were another ~5#. I'm ordering the flat VFN pin on hood today. Can you say 35# weight savings? !ypipe/ipipe will be worth another 30#. That with the short belt, new front tires, and a little more traction should put me deep in the 10.80s.
