Default Another one bites the dust! (8.8 rear)

Well pulled out my friend Sruns rear end today and his welds broke but not as bad as mine since he's an auto. I don't think he broke this while launching but when the DS broke and hit the TQ arm. But either way i told him if he was going to take it to Extreme Chassis to get fixed. he said he wanted his car up and running this year, so no. I'm going to take it up to work tomorrow and fix it on my lunch break.

I'm going to cut my loss on my EC 8.8" and get a 9" and be done with it. This will not be the only thing that breaks on it!

SUX2BU is that 8.8 brazed or stick welded. it kind of looks brazed from the pics but not sure.

Looks like the housing broke and not the weld.

Looks to me like steel was welded to cast and without
proper heat control (pre-heat / post-heat), and the
whole thing looks inadequately gusseted. Couple of
sledgehammer whacks crosswise would probably expose
that weld quality problem right off the bat. To my eye
it appears that the weld "peeled off" the cast along a
boundary of embrittlement. I think somebody needs to
go back to welding school. That torque arm mount
needs to be designed very differently. Thing is, how
are you going to do the right thing (heat-control-wise)
on an already-assembled 8.8 axle, without making a
big ol' mess? I think this is the root of the problem.
But too, there are processes that work well for mating
steel to cast, and there are ones that work for shinola
(which do we have here?).

Looks like a process problem also. Graphite expulsion is your enemy when welding cast and thats where using the correct electrode combined with adequate pre heat will make a world of difference.

Default 8.8

well yes the rear broke but not from HP, wich juan said, it was from a side load wich the rear wasn't designed to take, and that again this is the old design none of the rears are built that way anymore. when juan broke his rear and i saw the weak spot it has been totally redesigned to take ALOT more abuse. and more time and more prep is going into all the rears now also, as with anything you find a flaw in the design and adress it just as i have done! the rears are MUCH nicer and stronger now!

Craig,

Why don't you send everyone that has an "OLD DESIGN", or structurally flawed designs NEW stronger housings that way people (and their passengers) are safe when they drive their cars and we won't have anymore post about 8.8" housings breaking again. I don't see how this should be a problem, since you said you stand behind your product.

I know Thunder, MTI, TSP, and most vendors on the right would take care of it. ----->

Hey Craig, Could you maybe tell us when you started using this new design for the TA Mount? And could you maybe post some pic's or send me some pic's of the new design cause I think I have an old design. If I can get some pics of the new TA mount I can have my chassis guy up here take care of fixing it.

Thanks
Joe

hey joe i will send you some pics of the new design as well as any other customers that would like them. and by side load i mean his driveshaft broke aparently wich slapped the side of the TA mount causing it to brake the new design will take ALOT more abuse from all angles! it is ALL welded solid there are no unwelded areas "or weak spots" like before and its all made with metal that is twice the thickness and provides 4 times the weld area "because the tubing was ripping at the welds" and 4 times the strength also. keep in mind also the few cars that have broke these are mid to low 10 sec. m6 cars 1.30 to 1.50 60' with nitrous. thanx
