Default Heads/Cam Install Results

Alright just had my heads and cam installed at Norris Motorsports in Orlando (great place if i might add, Mike is a top notch guy).

Mods before Swap: Direct-Flo Lid, Mac-MidLengths + Off road-pipe, Cutout, FTRA, Bauer Ported ThrottleBody, Holley Filter, B&M Ripper

Baseline Dyno - 320RWHP/330RWTQ

Mods Added: TEA Stage 2 5.3 Heads milled .15
LS6 Intake Manifold, !EGR, !AIR, ASP Underdrive Pulley, TR 224/224 563/563 112 Cam.

Results after installs and tuning 409RWHP/392RWTQ

Advice upon completion: Enjoy the car have fun with it, but if you do decide to do something else, switch out the macs for some longtubes (which i agree with in the utmost) and due to the fact that i have a problem with my cutout being welded into a bullet and its all messed up in my i-pipe he said it could be choking my engine a bit and a few ponies (5-7) could be found there. at the time of this phone call he said there was some more tuning to be done but estimated no more then 2-3 more horses out of it.

What do you guys think i'll get from going with longtubes? and just out of curiosity.. does anyone think that baseline dyno is a little low? or perhaps They're dyno dynos low? (no flames)

Gongrats on the good numbers. FLP LT's got me 23rwhp 27rwtq increase from a stock Motor. So u can imagine what u will get with the LT's. U can check the dyno sheet before and after here http://community.webshots.com/sym/i...21PYrnsi_fs.jpg

Macs are not bad, but you could benefit from some longtubes... What gains will you see? Who knows.. Some have swapped to Longtubes and picked up 5rwhp. Some have picked up no peak, but some midrange and some have picked up 10rwhp throughout the powerband... Going with longtubes really depend if you think the money is worth a possible gain or not.. I am running Macs and I have consistently dyno'd over 410rwhp thru them with TEA heads and 4.10's.. What gears are you running by the way? Do you ever come out to Gandy? What type of car do you have?

Hey Ryan,

We ended up at 413RWHP and 392RWT at 12.9-13.0 to 1 A/F and 27 degrees of timing. As far as the exhaust goes, the y-pipe necks down to 2 1/2 or smaller at where the y-pipe adapts to the bullet muffler and is holding back some. I told you Vince would chime in about the MAC's Some cars work well with them and others seem to be down on power. I mainly mentioned going to long tube headers before going to a bigger cam as you mentioned.

In Vince's case I believe he could do better. Every heads/cam combo he has had has been in the 410-421RWHP area, not a big range, with cams from 221/221 to 23x-/23x bigun', a definite big range. Makes me think the long tubes may be more than just 5RWHP. Could be wrong. A lot of these big HP cars these days are using step headers with a circle track style collector, food for thought. You definitely have a good car here for the way the exhaust is setup. For what it is worth, your graph looks damn near identicle to Vince's except for having more power/torque under 3000RPM where you drive everyday.

Talk to you soon and thanks for the comments.

Mike

Sorry about no sig with information on the car, been way to lazy on to update and i think its really old so to embarassed to post it.

The car is a 1999 Navy Metallic Z28. 3.42s M6

I've been thinking about getting some hooker longtubes and a hooker y-pipe now and replacing the whole mac setup. I also looked at QTECs headers and now im investigating the advantage of merge collector benefits. But Originally i had this heads and cam project planned for march which im now finished with..and nitrous goes on in may.. Should i just forget the headers and continue on with the nitrous. or does the exhaust really need my attention for now?

P.S. I've never been out to gandy said to say..but i hear great stories from all my friends about it =)

I agree with Mike Norris about the exhaust setup.. I am going long tubes in the future.. I am busy playing with other things right now.. I might just get long tubes for my birthday this summer.. If Mike is right that my exhaust is hurting me.. I should see 430rwhp with my current H/C package..

I agree with the longtubes theory as well, Vince you probably would see a few more ponies with some longtubes. I was thinking of switching from my SLP's to one of the grott re-makes, probably QTP stainless if they turn out well. Anyways nice dyno and good numbers, those numbers seem very good on average for what I have experienced down here in Florida for NA cars.

One of the things I have been waiting on is someone to do a direct swap from Macs to Grotts.. Some do, but they go true duals and that is not a good comparison.. I want to see a direct swap where both came from a 3 inch y-pipe.. Those #'s would be interesting...

I like also like that dual cutout y pipe that QTP sells, I bet that bad *** being right off the headers that may be another viable option for you Vince? You could have it quiet as stock normal and then for a race open those bad boys up and have all the benefits of true duals and grotts if not even more.

If you are planning on running nitrous, I would defenitely look into longtubes.
