Exclamation Used 12 bolt question...

I was wondering if anyone has installed a used 12 bolt into there fbod. i have a 98 ta and was looking to do the same. i dont have the money to drop for a moser or strange kit. Heres a few questions i have about this..

1)wouldnt buyin a used 12 bolt and putting in some aftermarket axles and gears be just as good??
2)how much does a used gm rear end usually sell for?
3)what would be the best year and model to get one out of???
4)also are the axles the same pattern or would i need new rims??
5)does a used 12 bolt..bolt up to a 98 with out modification? if not what needs modded?

i hope someone here can help answer these questions thanks in advance!

i dont think any cars have the same length rear as we do, if you could shorten the axles you would probably be fine. you just need to have the tools/skills required to do that. other than that, i think 12-bolt center sections are pretty much interchangable so you ever did break anything you could buy direct replacements for it.

Can't do it.....do some more research. The old GM 12 bolt housings aren't the same as the current Moser/Strange housings due to the torque arm suspension.

Yeah, the old 12-bolts are totally different. T/A mounts, panhard mount, ABS is you want it to remain active, Backing plates.
Best suggestion I could make is wait till someone de-mods and pick up a used F-body 12 bolt.
You would spend a small fortune of fabbing up the mounts and everything else, if it could be done.
Hope this helps,
Will
