Thinking about putting 4.10's in my Daily Driver 10-bolt...
Bad idea? Why? How much am I looking at here?
I know it wont be stong, but I plan to pretty much baby it most of the time and prolly 1-2 track passes every 3mo, street tires.

i had the 4.10s put in my stock untouched 10-bolt when I had the H/C done. It's my daily driver, and I have put 17 track passes on it, with some high 1.4 60' but my car is also lighter weight than most others, and added weight is what will put a hurtin on your parts...or i could just be very lucky so far
Just so you know, after you make your first pass with the 4.10s they most likely will wine a little.

10 Second Club
i got that same whine but after my 5th pass or so. i removed the carrier the next day and found a chipped tooth. these were brand new gears. since the chip was not that big, i reinstalled it and went back to the track. 6 or so more passes later, i broke an axle shaft. replaced that with a new one and then went back to the track the next month. no problems at all. then while raceing it on the street, the gears shattered on a good hard launch on a bridge. i removed those and put in some used 3.73s out of an Astro van. after many many more times at the track and plenty of street races, even 4 10 second runs, i havent even had to remove the cover. no more problems yet.

I've pretty much had 4.10s the whole time I've had my car. They are perfectly fine for a daily driver, even in snow. I'm on my second set though...The first set broke after 30K. Would never even consider going back to 3.42s.

I got a quote from a local guy for parts & labor of $425 if I need new bearings and $350 w/out new bearings. Are those descent prices? BTW- They are for GM brand gears.

Yes...that is very good. I paid 475 for mine I believe . Oh well 4.10s have held up very well for me. I have had them for about 2.5 yrs now and would never go back. Sure they whine at about 80ish but they get beat on regularly too. Good luck.

I have 4.10 Motive Gears in my M6 01 Z. The car has 68,000 miles on it with the original clutch and about 45,000 on the gears. The car has about 25 track passes on it with half of them on BFG Drag radials. There is a very slight whine from the gears but that has been there from day one and isn't that noticable. As you can tell by my mileage I drive my car everywhere and all year round. Without a doubt the 4.10 are a blast to drive and makes 6th gear all that more usable. If you do the gears also be ready to change the following with them:
1. New shifter (pro 5 or B&M, etc) The car will wind up really fast. You don't want to miss a shift.
2. LCA and a relocation bracket. The gears for sure will induce massive wheel spin. Doing this mod will help limit that and even more importantly reduce wheel hop. Wheel hop is what will shorten your gear life faster than anything else.

If you get 'em, make sure you have a rainy day fund for a 12 bolt. I had 4.10s in my 10 bolt and they lasted about 1 year, with about 50 passes at the track on Nittos before I sheared a couple teeth off the gears... sounded god awful when I did that. It was still driveable, but made a nifty "clunkclunkclunk" sound at lower rpms due to the "skipping" over the space where the teeth got sheared.
Got a 12 bolt and it's a relief not having to constantly worry about whether or not this is the day that the rear end grenades...

I don't take my car to the track that much, maybe once or twice a year, not to mention this will be on street tires.
I have the factory hurst short throw and a LSS
I also have LCA's, but do I really need the relocation brackets?? The car isn't lowered at all.

You can see how the car launches after the gear change and always add the relocation bracket later if you notice too much wheel hop. My car isn't lowered either but with the gear change the amount of wheel I experience did increase.
