Absolute Best Overall Cam for my setup ???
Guys,
I'm going to do a cam on my car this winter as a project to keep me from going crazy while my 01 SS is off the road for the winter. I could really use some help decided what to get (cam and springs) based on my criteria below:
Current Mods that are important to note: Yank ST3500, 3.23 gears, Corsa Exhaust, 275 Nitto DR's on rear, ATI Pulley, and HP Tuner Software (this is important for obvious reasons)
Future mods: Mac Mid Length Headers, Ported TB+MAF, and 17x11" rear Nitto DR's (315's)
I am looking for something that would give me the greates torque and HP between 3500 and 6100 RPM yet maintain relatively quiet valve train and good valvetrain life so extremely high lift would be out of the question. With the HP Tuner software I can tune as needed.
What reasonable HP and TQ numbers can I expect as well as what approximate 1/4 mile times. My car is a hardtop and has the basic weight removal stuff done so it is fairly light.
Thank you very much !

One more note, I'd prefer the car did not idle like a top fuel eliminator. It needs to run smooth at cruise and in lockup ~1500 rpm's.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

Colonel here makes 420rwhp and runs 11.2's with that cam. Sounds stock (Almost),
You'll have to change springs anyway, and now that PP "Gold" and Comp 921 are here, changing springs every 15K is not an issue anymore.
That cam will pull to 6800 on a very flat curve, but it starts making 400rwhp (H/C) at around 6100.
I've been searching for a long time and I chose the stealth beacause it is what it is STEALTH. No one will suspect you can blow their doors off with "That stock sounding ride"

How close to 400 RWHP will that cam make without a set of heads ? I am hoping for 385-390 if possible but obviously a nice flat curve is what really translates to quicker et's (as well as traction).

I would say pretty darn close if not 400. But you'll need headers (Macs will do but LT's will give you a little extra). Of course a good dyno tune will maximise that.
IMO 370>375 cam only w/tune, 380>390+ with headers and tune.
With My AFR's 62cc and 11:1 CR, I'm shooting for 430rwhp

Stealth cam-only, on an A4 should be in the 370's, but nowhere near 390.
MAC's don't give up much to LT's, but if they're not ordered yet, go with LT's.
A TR224 on a 114 may be what you're looking for... low lift, good torque. You'll have some valvetrain noise though.

He has 3:23's, stock rear, with all the bolt ons he is planning he will reach that number.
Or are you telling me that Colonel got 50rwhp from his S2 heads???

Great dyno numbers aren't always repeatable.
If everyone got 402 rwhp from a smallish cam, everyone would be using it.
PS. I edited my post some.

A lot of it is in the tuning, and the compatibility of the set up, not to mention where you live and that every car is no the same.
TR 224 is an X-ER lobe (I think) and quite aggressive. A superb street cam and again needs a plathera of matching parts to be fully effective.
There is also the TSP 225, TSP 224R, FM10, to name a few. All are in the same power range depending on your mods and applications.

Other people's Dyno charts a very deceptive, don't expect to get there results. It's just a good basis for it's capability. My first cam was the 216/220 cam and it only got me to 370 RWHP with LT's, all bolt on's and CNC S1 heads on my A4, and got me 12.1's in the 1/4. I put the TR224 cam in with no other changes and got 390 RWHP and 11.8's in the 1/4. I think it would be tough to get 400 RWHP from a A4 cam only stealth setup (unless you live in Texas), maybe an M6. The colonel has some big $$ LS6 heads and has a very impressive fast setup. I think he put down big numbers even with just some bolt on's no heads and cam.
Anyway, the Stealth II is a good choice, so is the TR224, and the others listed. TR224 on a 112 is my favorite for small cams though. I wouldn't mind trying a Stealth cam myself though, it's even smog friendly with that 116 LSA..
BTW, the TR cam is not on XE-R lobes according to them. there's are a little more aggresive..
