Default G5X2 vs T-Rex

I'm planning on camming my hawk in a few months and I can't decide between the G5X2/X3 or the T-Rex. I have a lot of friends running the X2 with great results but I like the simplicity of being able to order the T-Rex brand new with everything I need to make it work for $850. Can I get the G5X2 and everything necesarry to install it for under $850? I'm not afraid to go with used parts if I can get the X2 for under the cost of the T-Rex. I am leaning towards the X2 right now but if it's going to be more expensive and be more of a hassle than the T-Rex then I might as well go with the T-Rex. What are your opinions?

Also, this cam will be backed up by a Moser 12 Bolt and a Spec Stage 3 clutch. I believe in having a good platform to build on before adding power.

There was a thread a few weeks back that was at least two pages long comparing the trex to the g5x3 cam. Just search for it. Yeah, the x3 and x2 are different cams, but from what I hear they are pretty similar. Hope this helps

OK David, you can easily get the G5X2 package for around $850.

G5X2 cam - $400
chromemoly pushrods - $100
Patriot duals - I believe there is a special on TSP for $350 for the kit

There you go. $850. You might also want a new timing chain, an ported oil pump while you're at it - Perhaps an underdrive pulley as well. Do it while it is dismantled. You can get some of us off the board to lend a hand in installation. We are pros.

Thanks Matt

I think I could get the cam used for about $300 and the pushrods used for roughly $50-70. I only have 30k miles on my stock timing chain so it might still be usable, though it's a good idea to replace it now. What kind of pricing can I get on the ported oil pump and what sort of gains to you get from that?

I want to put down over 400 rwhp and I want to run in the 11's cam only. The T-Rex puts down very impressive numbers on the dyno but does it make use of those numbers at the track?

headers, slicks and skinnies... you better be deep into the 11's with that.... be sure and get 4.30's in the rear end so you don't hafta doi it twice (like i am )

The oil pump will not have any gains per say, but you will have sound piece of mind on oil psi. Thunder Racing has great ported pumps, and you had better replace that timing chain while you are there - it is a cheap part. You may even want to go JWIS or double roller. 11's - hell yeah. With this set-up it is guaranteed provided your car holds up, and you drive it well. The G5X2 is still the fastest cam in the country I believe.

Yeah, I'm not arguing which cam is better. I'm arguing which one is easier/cheaper to do. The two fastest cam only LS1s are running 10.773 (G5X2) and 10.783 (T-Rex) that .01 difference can be tossed up as driver error. Both cams are potent and both will get me into the 11's. I just want to know which one is going to be less of a hassle to get and install and which one will provide the best drivability. Keep in mind I'm going to be on a Moser 12 Bolt with 4.10's.

If you want to save money on parts, why not get the stock LS6 oil pump for about 65-70 bucks instead of a ported one for 100+. I bought a new stock LS6, and it idles at 45 psi, 60 psi at about 2k rpms, and 70 or so at WOT. Ported oil pumps with higher psi are not really necessary.

I might do that. Anywhere I can save money is great with me!
