if you can keep from moving the crank or cam then no, but if you move them then yes you will have to make sure that everything is lined up before firing the car up for the first time.

piston/valve timing will be off. you will bend valves. you do not want to do that.

Your mechanic is talking about ignition timing and you are talking about cam timing. Two different things. I also hope your mechanic knows what a distributor is.

What year/type car do you have? And what is your mechanic actually doing to it?

the car is a 2000 t/a so what would i have to do to fix the cam timing and how much would that be? i just spoke with him and he told me that the car had no distributor so that makes more sence casued i never saw one on the car, specially since it's a fuel injected engine.

Cam and crank sensors only report the position(s) to the computer for injector and ignition timing respectively. The cam and crank need to be orientated correctly before you start the motor. Being fuel injected doesn't preclude you from having a distributor either, at least on older cars. Newer cars tend to have distributorless ignitions.

I would find it really hard to believe that your mechanic doesn't already know this.

you right older f injected cars do have them but not the ls1 anyways yea he told me that as long as i aligned the chain back on correctly it would be fine, and i alingned it back up to the only pin a saw on there.
