Default TSP 231/237 cam installed!

Installed my TSP 231/237, with Patriot gold dual springs and an ASP pulley... I am extremely pleased with this cam! It fired right up on the first try, found idle within a few seconds and ran like a champ from the very first turn of the key.

I took it out for a test drive today, logged about 110 miles on it... all I can say is that it has a nasty mean idle, and pulls hard in the upper RPM range. Above 6k, it's still pulling HARD, when the stock cam used to fall on its face. I'm only running the canned Predator tune right now, as James from RWTD is working on a custom tune for me right now... even on the canned tune, it runs great, and it doesn't die on me. The only time it had any trouble at all was on a 'hot' start... I have to give a little bit of gas for a few seconds to help it find idle, and then it thumps away right at 800 rpms. Cold start it starts right up and finds idle immediately... it didn't die once on me at any stoplights. When cruising, the car sounds just like it did before the cam... only at idle and when you go WOT can you really tell there's a big cam in there.

I have to give major thanks to Ryan (Vtec_this), Doug (99LSS1), and Zeke (DrEvyl) for helping me out with the install... also a big thanks to Mark (WAHUSKER) for lending me some tools to help make the job easier. And of course, a HUGE thanks to JmX for his LS1Howto.com instructions on a cam and valvespring job... Wouldn't have been able to do it without those instructions.

Glad you're enjoying the cam! Be sure to post up your track results, and let us know if you need any help with any of the rest of your combo in the future!

Yea, man that cam is awsome!! Through a 12bolt, I put out 393HP at the RW with a cut out and lid. Although after a few thousand miles you may want to check the oil, i found a piece of a valve spring in my oil and pulled the covers to find one of my tips of my inner springs broke. Just a heads up. Good luck!!

I've had my 231/237 in for 2 days now and love it. Got a mail order tune by Jason at TSP. It runs great and like I said, I love it!

I have heard some great things about the TSP 231/237. I had been looking at just the Thunder Racing 224/227 & 227/224 cams before, but now am very interested in the TSP cam. I am also planning on putting nitrous on my car along with a cam. Is the 231/237 a good cam to use with nitrous? If not, what would you guys recommend? My car is a daily-driven 2001 Camaro SS with all intake mods, and full exhaust.

Glad you are enjoying it Adam! The 231/237 is one of my favorite cams to install.. I love seeing the look on peoples faces when they come to pick their cars up and hear it idling. Thanks again for letting me do the install

Grats on the cam, I'm sure it really woke up the beast!!!!

If you can post a sound clip of the idle.

I am planning on going with a bottle at some point, and some heads... so this was the cam that the guys at TSP recommended for me. The split duration is good for nitrous... it also likes to run in the upper RPM range. The highest I could set my rev limiter to on the canned Predator tune is 6600, and it's still pulling like a freight train up there. One of my requests for James at RWTD is to give me the capability to set my rev limiter at 6900-7000 rpms.

Gears are definitely a must for this car... my 4.11s make it so easy to get moving in first gear. I don't have to do anymore clutching than I did with the stock cam... if you have gears or are planning on it, I think it is very serviceable as a daily driver.

I encourage anyone who's thinking about a cam to not be afraid to go with something big if that's what you want... I was kind of apprehensive about a cam this big since I didn't want to have to fight my car to drive it on a daily basis. Didn't have to fight it at all today... even when cruising around with the A/C blasting. It was great!

Congrats on the cam install. I love mine and have had it in the car for 7k miles with no problems. I still have stock rear with 342 gears and daily drive it know problem but the gears will most definetly help it out.

The thing that surprised me about your cam Jason is how well it idles. I mean, it's definitely got that big-cam sound, but it idles as 'nice' as my Hot Cam (with HS 1.8 rockers) does. I think a lot more people would buy this cam if they knew that....

Hehe, I have the stock gears in my car and it is still just fine as a daily driver. That's just my opinion but I really haven't had any problems. Oh, Scott, I sent you a pm.

I was surprised on how well it idled on that canned Predator tune too... Ryan and I were stoked when it fired right up on the first turn of the key after the install was completed. Also the fact that it never died on me at all was a pleasant surprise... the only time it had any trouble was on a hot start, and that should be fixed with the tune.

Overall I am very happy... can't wait to the 30th so I can see what it'll turn at the track.

yah alot of people are scared away by how large the cam is they think they are gonna loose all driveability...I love how the car idles and with the right tune you shouldnt have much of a problem getting any cam surge to go almost completely away. The only drawback is the cam doesnt make as much downlow tq as some of the strait duration cams do but it certainly makes great peak hp #'s and with the right combination can really shine at the track.

I'm happy to see everyone having such great experiences with this cam. I haven't found any negative feedback at all. I will be placing my order for the package sometimes within the next two weeks. Is everyone installing this cam "dot to dot", or has anyone had any trouble with PV clearance with stock heads?

We installed mine dot to dot, and no clearance issues at all with the stock heads... everything went real smoothly.

I just put this cam in also and I absolutely love it. Started up on the first try, runs great. I also did mine dot to dot and didn't have any problems.
