Drag Racing Tech - Shakedown run with Grotts and ST3500...!

INSSANE

Bear in mind that all I ran with was BFG DRs on 16x8 rims, Grott 1 3/4 LTs wide open B4 the cats, a ST3500, shift kit on Level 2, D-Flow lid, and a poly trans mount. Not too much. No weight reduction beyond !spare and ! back seat. No tuning and NO suspension beyond what stock on an SS.

With a 1.79 60ft the car ran a 12.58 @ 107.8 and that's with bouncing off the rev limiter on the 2-3 shift.

I did manage a 1.62 60ft, but on the 2-3 shift I hit the rev limiter for more than a full second and the car only ran a 13.2 @ 102. DAMN!

I will raise the shift points, bump the limiter, have TQ management removed and my ASP UD pulley will go in.

As is, with that 1.62 I should have been 12.30s. With the tiny tuning and pulley and a similar 60 ft to the 1.6, I'm hoping for the 12.10s!!! If not better.

OK. Analyze my run and tell me if my predictions are correct.

Thanks!
Nick

Good runs! <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cheers.gif" />
Get your shiftpoints figured out and you should go a lot quicker <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

ST3500 ROCKS!!!

I hit the limiter my 2-3 shift too, but only if I hook decent. Bouncing the limiter well before the line at my 1/8 track trapping 89.8mph'ish.

My 10.5" ET Streets can't hang with my ST3500. Going to 10" rims and 11.5" slicks next year for the track. I'm tired of losing because of my inconsistant launches. See my SOB thread (http://www.ls1tech.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=5;t=002332)

When my track is hooking decent, I get 1.60-.61 60fts run after run.

12.3s ... definitely. You'll need to find about 3 more mph to put you in the 12.1 range - get your pully and tuning should do it ... welcome to bolt-on 11s hunt. <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cheers.gif" />

Tan...do you have an M6? If so, that's why the MPH is higher.

Yeah, with the quick tune, the pulley, and a super sucker or FTRA, I'll prob. find the MPH.
Thanks for the good words!

but back to the first post..

for stock internals dont raise the limiter above 6300! Its not gonna help you do squat. You need to lower your 2-3(not raise) shift points.

I had to lower mine -4 to get off the limiter with my vig3600.

Just lower by one untill you get off of it, and riase the limiter to 6300(6200stock)

awesome 60 though!!

wait till you cut a 1.5 or so <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" /> and BTW, it can be donw on drag radials. Ive been 1.58 on 245/50/16 nittos, while others have been 1.55's <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" /> So BFG's will hold for those 60's also

Most of your ET is made up in your first 60ft.

Same mph + little better 60ft = alot better ET.

I haven't run the 1/4 with current setup, but I'm guessing I'd go thru the traps about 109-110, but since my 60ft is 1.60, I'd run a 12.2-12.3 or so. Given my POS trans shifts 2-3.

HOW TO LAUNCH YOUR ST3500: Brake the car to 3000rpm at the line and let her eat. Traction is a must! Disclaimer : If you're stalled at 3000+RPM for more than 3 seconds, you will go into Limp-Home Mode.

1.60 60ft ROCK! I can't wait for the 1.5's and 1.4's! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

Just smoke the tires literally until you see smoke for about 5 seconds or so and let off the brake and ease the gas so you roll out of the water box. Stop the car and give it a nice punch to make sure you'll hook.

That's how I cut the good 60ft. My 1.62 was done by stalling the car at 900RPMs. This was done at US41.

My 1/8 on the 1.62 run was 7.991 at 85.41mph but that may be a little inaccurate because of the shifting prob.
The 1.79 60 got me a 8.014 at 85.87mph. That was the 12.5 run which is much more accurate.

If so, do you realize that all you're doing is throwing water up into your wheel well? I'm talking a shitload of water. You burn 'em out of the box, and the water drips right back down onto your tire.

I sit right behind the burnout box for atleast 2 hours practicing my lights in between runs every Saturday. I watch all kinds of burnouts and the ones that throw water all over the place aren't pretty.

Dry hops will take the good coating of hot rubber off the tire. Just pull to the line.

Well if that's the case I must be making up my 1.62 60ft. Ask a tech why they spray the water. They don't do it for fun and if you do it the right way...ie how I do it, water won't drip.

I didn't say you were lying. I also didn't say you could never possibly hook doing your burnout that way.

I watch atleast 100 burnouts every Sat. night. I'm about 5-8ft from the car, behind/on the side of the Burnout backstop.

Every guy that starts his burnout IN the water, when he's done I watch the water RUN, not drip, but run off his fender.

If you don't believe me, have somebody watch you do your burnout.

I never have a problem if I roll out of the box after burning out. It's the people that burnout and stop the rear wheels while still in the water and then move out that have the problem.

Look man, I'm just tryin to help a brother out.

I've seen all kinds of burnouts up close. I'm talking within 10ft from the car. I don't care what you do, if you start your burnout while IN the water, you're going to throw water into your wheelwell. Period..no if's, and's or but's about it.

I ususally do a quick spin in the water to get the tires wet, pull forward 3 or 4 feet and do my burnout...

My ST3500 wants to push the front tires at about 2800...

My best 60's seem to come on a 2000-2200 launch, but they are still quite a bit behind everybody else's

98TAauto
09-06-2002, 07:39 AM
i only back into like like 2 inches of the water box. Just where its damp and not water standing

then i start spinning for like 3 seconds, let off brake and roll ahead like 4 ft outta all water for sure and continue to brake and heat the tires up for 4-5 seconds, then let off brake again and burn them as close to the tree as i can <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

John force here <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" /> LOL

but doing any burnout in the water box does sling water on the wells which will drip on the tires. Its a big reason why many people cant hook on drag radials and wonder why. As long as you keep doing your burnout when your outta the water up to the tree then you are probably fine.

then you get the smart ones that drive threw it and do no burnout <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" />

When you get your shift points sorted out and stop hitting the rev limiter, w/that 1.62 60 you should run 12.2s.

41 does zero track prep on T&T nights thats why my 60s sucked. Would have had a new best w/a better 60. I always go around the water, back into it, roll about a foot past the edge of the water and start my burnout. I watch the mirrors 'till I see 'em smoke and hold it for a couple seconds.

No problem, mods are...

Vig3200, lid (no kidding), FRA, SFCs, LCAs, !swayar, Macs w/orp, SS catback w/QTP cutout, 3.73s, Nittos and skinnies. Race weight is about 3475# or so. Thats all I can think of right now.

Today at Byron the best I could do in 95 degree heat and high humidity was 12.63 @ 108.45 (1.70) on ET Streets <img border="0" title="" alt="[Sad]" src="gr_sad.gif" />

You want to know how to keep the ST3500 off the limiter durring 2-3rd shift?

Get rid of any ported MAFs and go back to stock or use a calibrated MAF. And/or leave it in OD durring the run. If I left it in 3rd I would hit the limiter, but in OD it would not.

INSSANE

Don't have a ported maf, only descreened. I'll try the OD though. Some have said that even in OD they get it.

Can't hurt to try. This is obviously when you are for sure that your RPM is correct shift point wise. Horked for me though. It just sucked when you forget to put in OD and start slamming the limiter again. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Sad]" src="gr_sad.gif" />

Only did it with my ST-3800 too, never with my PT-4400. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />
