Default WOW...just got quoted for a cam install

I went to the one reputable shop near me to get a quote for a cam install. I told them i would have the cam, retainers, springs, pushrods and any specialty tools they would need i would provide to them to borrow...labor alone they quoted me for 17 HOURS!!!! 1173.39 just for labor for the install. Apparently i have no choice but to install this damn thing myself. or does anyone know a place in dc md or va that does good work and doesn't charge out the ***. I mean i asked the place which they wanted, my arm or my leg. So i doubt they'd even do the swap for me now anyhow.

Man...
A few keywords for you:

Weekend
Buddies
Beer
Cam Swap
Fun....

Do the swap yourself and put the cash you would pay for an install somewhere else. With what they're tryin to charge for a cam install. You're halfway to a Moser rear...

about the moser...i said nearly the same thing when i was talking to my buddy about it. Im not mechanically inclined for ****. I do have a friend who has built 20 something cars, all with heads and cam packages, perhaps he can take a saturday and sunday off and we can get his father to help me (a car builder as well). I dunno, i was shocked. 1200 bucks for what seems to just be time consuming but relatively straight forward. They were even talking about how they have to pull out the heads and ****, and i read the write ups...nowhere did it say anything abotu pulling heads off. perhaps i missed something. i dunno. I just wanan get this sucker in before i leave for school so i can beebop into University of Maryland rocking the damn administration building!

They really wanted to let you have it huh? Do the install yourself with jmx's write up and learn about your engine in the process.

Nope, heads and intake stay on the engine during the cam swap. The hardest part of the swap is getting off the balancer and changing the springs.

These are the instructions I used.

While I'm no mechanic, I've helped out on some of my friends' LS1's, so I'd love to turn a wrench or two to help. I live in Upper Marlboro, MD, but am only gonna be in town about 3 more weeks- PM me if you're gonna do it by then and I'll see if I can come for the party

Jeff, im hoping to install this in about 2 weeks. I see this is your first post on ls1tech.com. Welcome. And thanks for the offer. Ill definately let u know. The more then merrier. i would be alot happier if i got to just turn a wrench or two but had someone who knows what they are doing do the majority. id definately pay a healthy sum of money to have someone i know (who knows what they are doing) do it for me and let me help a little. this totally threw me off, usually this particular shop is very good with pricing. but this one threw me for a damn loop.

thats crazy, shop has no idea what there talking about number one so i wouldnt trust them to do it regardless.
hell ttp does the install for less than 1500. there cam, springs all gaskets with there stage one package but that inclused all parts not just put in what you bring
id stay away from that shop you went to regardless, they cant know what they are doing , atleast on a ls1

I did mine. Before that I never worked on a LS1 before. If you can read and follow directions then you can do the install yourself.Don't be scared, it's not as hard as you think.Print out the directions and take your time, you'll do fine

fbodycentral in baltimore can do it for $600. I had mine done there. They did an excellent job and they are well known around the DC metro area. They have website www.fbodycentral.com. Check it out.

If you have the tools out on a medical type cart, with all air tools and every speacalty tool that you need, including a lift, it is very possible. There really isn't that much to it.
