Anybody take air filter out at track?
Just wondering if any of you ram air guys take out your air filter at the track only? I have all my baffles and screens out of my hood. Just wondering if the air filter was out if that would force more air into the engine, or if its just too dangerous. I don't even have a screen in my MAF. Well, if any of you do it, let me know if it makes that big of difference. Thx.

I don't think it's worth the power increase. If you ingest too much dirt you'll increase your engine wear significantly. When I see oil analysis reports with high levels of silicon (which indicate poor air filtration) I also see higher levels of wear metals too. There is a direct correlation between the two.

I run my air lid open at the track but i cover the filter tray with pantyhose to keep dirt and bugs out. I normaly pick up a small bit of ET but pull a solid 1 MPH without the K&N. I have been running the open lid for 4 years without any problems.

I've done a good bit of comparison testing on my car using paper (Fram), K&N, and the Holley. the Fram was the worst, followed by K&N, then no filter, then the Holley. Yes, the Holley actually performed better than no filter at all. I've verified this on more than 2 separate occasions.
YMMV, but that's what I've personally seen...

I dont know what it is about my car and no filter, but I typically lose a tenth and a MPH with no filter vs. K&N.
I have no idea why, but I've tested it many nights on many different passes <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

I consistantly see .5 to 1 mph when I remove the filter. I doesn't matter if it's a K&N, Holley or a paper one. I don't really like the oiled filters that much. I run a Holley now cause I got tired of the crappy extra gasket with the K&N. I run a oiled filter cause I have removed the baffels and sealed the hood to the airbox and the filter gets wet in a hard rain-I think the oiled filters work better when they get wet. Thats the only reason I see to run a oiled filter on a car that is pretty much stock. JMO
