Default What performance to expect from 422 in a 4A?

I am a new member of the "super stroker" club. Car is a muscle car's muscle car.

I have an ARE 422 (4.1 bore and 4.0 stroke), ARE Stage 2 5.7 litre heads, (not sure about cam specs), Yank PT3900, Grotyohann 1-3/4 longtubes, ORY, shift kit, LS6 intake, 3.73:1 rear gears, 4 HAL adj. shocks, torque arm, front k frame, and some other, more minor, mods

Dyno: 454rwhp (tranny locked); torque not measurable, but likely over 500; A/F 12.6:1

Weight: 3408 lb. + driver + gas ~ 3612 lb.

Track performance (only two track appearances thus far):
11.85 at 117 mph on ET Streets at 14 PSI cold (60' was 1.7X)
12.4X at 117 mph on street tires (60' ranged from 2.2-2.0)

All runs have yielded trap speeds between 115-high 117. Have not engaged tranny lockup on any run.

Caveats: on both occasions, track was slippery and weather seemed to hurt (other cars in attendance were down in mph and up in ET)

I believe the car should (will) ET in the low 11s. Not sure what mph to expect, though.

I would think you should go a lot faster than that with the mods you have. Isnt that the same mph range you ran with just your ARE S2 HCI package?

I think something isnt right somewhere (tuning, trans, etc?). I am sure you will figure it out though. I would think mid-high 10's@125-127+mph should be the goal to shoot for.
Cheers,
Chris

I think your losing alot of et with those 60fts. At your raceweight and power I would expect very low 11's at 122-124.

I went 11.04@122mph, 3500 raceweight at 2200 DA weather in Chicago last week with my iron block 422 ARE (4.060 bore x 4.075).

I have like a 3600 yank, and I am going to a 4500 this week. I think a 10.8 is very doable at 2200 DA, but I think a 10.6 is possible with better weather.

Play with your combo, I dropped .14 just from correctly adjusting my 1-2 shiftpoint... I could use an increase of 200-300 rpms upward for my 2-3 shift and I think I'd see 124mph from that the shift ARM is sad it drops to like 4500.

Something's not right unless that's a really mild cammed setup or one setup for N2O. What cam is it? Was this through a full catback? Any idea what the heads flow?

Thanks for the encouragement, everybody. I know I'll go much quicker. Mostly, I need to make more runs for a more accurate "baseline".

Col., the cam is not mild at all. Wade asked if I wanted a "big" cam. Will find out specs this week. Motor is not set up for nitrous. I don't have the head flow numbers but I will get them.

Chris, my mph was 115.X with my Stage 2 heads/cam combo, so I have gained approx. 2 mph since then. Then again, I often used my tranny lockup, so perhaps I have gained more than 2 mph considering that I haven't used it with the 422. I understand you gained something like 3-4 mph with the lockup.

PSJ - If you ran that time in 2200 DA weather then you've got a 10.7X-8X @ 124-5 just from better weather. Throw in Colonel's verter, a FTRA and your gonna be moving. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

Then next you need to go on Colonel's special weight reduction plan. <img border="0" alt="[judgement]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_judge.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

yeah I gained 3mph from the lockup. I locked it as soon as I was into third. (Maybe a one second pause before locking it)
Good luck getting it figured out <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

I get about 1.5mph from mine. What's with all these ARE cars lately? Unless they run juice they seem to run subpar. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />

Mines running great <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

I think the 200R tranny in my car liked the lockup better than a 4L60E. I think I ran 120 with no lockup and right around 122.6mph with lockup.

Cheers,
Chris

There are some great running NA ARE setups out there <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />
I think Steve needs to find out what is going on with his car.

454rwhp LOCKED?!?!

i think you mean unlocked. especially since you say your torque is "unmeasurable"

what is the peak?

how can you spend 15g's and not know what cam you have?

ARE has come a long way lately (almost far enough for me to like them), but if it really only makes 450rw locked, you need to send it back.

Yours runs well, but none of the others (PSJ, this guy, etc) make power. Maybe their valves are too big? Maybe they all need 13.5:1 cr and a solid roller? (Just joking!!!!)

SSTeveL should be able to go low 11's@12_mph with his current setup.

I'd look into shiftpoints steve.

Post an entire slip, one where you raced on ET Streets.

John
11.04
1.53
7.0 1/8th
98mph 1/8th
122mph

Terry no offense but I don't care how you run. Your car is lighter than mine by a lot. I am NOW at 3500 raceweight and I was at 3650 raceweight. I'll get to 3450 raceweight but that's it, I refuse to take out more weight.

You can make a stock LS1 run 10s if its light enough, I'm talking about RWHP on a dyno. 450rwhp is pretty weak for a big motor like that unless there is some good reason (IE stock cam, stock manifolds+cats, etc). Add in a huge cam, 12:1 cr, and LS6 heads and well, I'd look for 480rwhp min in an unlocked A4!

Stock hood, iron block, stock airbags, steering wheel, stock brakes full catback it adds up. Without the iron block I can easily get down to 3400 raceweight that is 3200 for the car.

No offense to anyone, but I think alot of (a whole hell of a lot of it) comes down to the "overall package." Tuning plays a major role in how well a car performs as well.

Look at Campbell's car. That's a perfect example of a well thought out package. All of the components comliment each other and work well together to make a stout package.

At the beginning of last year, my car barely ran in the 11's. With the same heads/cam and better matching of parts (gears/converter/exhaust/etc), I ran 10.8's in about the same weather. I had to bust my *** and change a bunch of stuff around to make improvements like that, but it taught me a lot.

Maybe it's strictly coincidence that some of the "subpar" performers have ARE engines. I don't want to name names (if I could even remember them), but I have seen cars from all the major shops out there that didn't seem to live up to their potential and/or expectations.

Yeah, my car is somewhat lightweight (3120lbs). But it runs 10.20's. Would it slow down to 11.50's if it was a more portly 3600lbs? No. Nick and Wade built me a heck of an engine, but I don't think they put any extra special "magic" in it that doesn't go into any other engine that comes out of their shop. My whole combination works together.

And Terry, my compression is less than 13.5:1 <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />
