Question Stall converter??(DID SEARCH)

I was wondering what a stall converter does? Where is it located? Does it increase performance or just enhance the mods on the ride already? Is it useful for both auto/manual transmissions? THANKS!!!!!

Try www.converter.cc or www.converter.com for info. tci's website will have info too. hell, I think howstuffworks.com has info on this.
