Default tr220 cam/ stock manifolds

I know it is best to have headers when u install a cam but I have the tr220 -112 cam in my garage just waiting to be installed..I have not bought headers and since i have the loudmouth and the y-pipe already I figure it will be breathing almost efficiant enough?? Will I still get good power gains with this setup?? headers are in the future ..just like the distant future... any help would be appreciated.. thanks.steve

you can install it as is but dont expect huge gains with practically no horsepower mods. i'd wager ~20rwhp from the cam.

I would be surprised if you are able to get 20HP. One of the problems being that 98 and 99 had the quite restrictive exhaust manifolds. The 2000+ manifolds flow, for what they are, quite well.

I ran the exact cam with stock 2000 manifolds, ported heads, stock Y pipe and a WS6 exhaust. The car definitely had more power than my buddies car that just had headers. You should be able to easily pick up 20rwhp, and you'll pick up some decent torque under the curve. Remember, there are several guys who have seen 30+ with just an LS6 cam. When I finally installed LTs, I couldnt believe the power gain. Had to have been an additional 35hp at least.

If headers are in the distant future, then I would follow GM's lead and go to a split. Sell that cam and an increase the exhaust duration by 4 - 8 degrees. 220/224 112 or 220/226 114 should both pass emissions.

When I switched from the LM and SLP Y-pipe to Hooker LT, ORY and Hooker Catback, I gained 20 hp on the dyno. This was before my heads & Cam.

If you just do the cam, you will probably see 20 hp improvment. If you do both headers and cam at the same time you will see 45 to 50 hp with tuning.

I would get a set of headers and do both at the same time. That way you will only have to pay for tuning once.

Good Luck,

Al

Go ahead and put the cam in. You will not be disappointed. I gain 30 HP to the rear wheels just with a 216 cam! My dyno sheet and time slip prove it!
