Default What is a "mini-spool"?

I bought a used Moser 9" recently to put on my Formula. How does a mini-spool work and how is it different from a Spool or a Posi?

A mini-spool just replaces the "guts" of a standard diff. It works like a spool, just not as strong.

A mini-spool wont really help prolong the life of the stock 10 bolt. There are too many other weak links. I'm not even sure if anyone does make a mini for a 7 5/8" 10bolt. You'll need to run c-clip eliminators anyway.

Cheap Redneck Spool
Remove rear end cover. Clean out oil use lots of brake clean. Take welder and weld the spiders together. DO NOT weld axles to spiders.

The only reason you would run a true spool is for strenght. The mini spool is a weaker spool, why anyone would run it? Im not sure? No one I know runs one.

Some circle track guys run them for class limitations where a standard spool is not permitted.

Stronger than a posi I guess, but for a street application you may want to look at a Detroit locker, or the new posi-locker from Auburn (I think they call it the ECTED or something, basically an electronic locker that is a 2.5:1 bias posi when unlocked).

To my knowledge no one makes a 7.5" mini-spool... I've seen a few people search for one over the past 5 years or so. For that matter, I belive a full-sized spool is fairly rare as well (although I swear I read about a company in the south that made them for cheap). Sticky tires + full spool + high torque = broken splines. They're not popular for a reason.
