Question Is it my tranny or converter?? Problem?

Today i was gettin on an onramp and punched it. I was going around 30mph or so at the time. It hit hard but then soon bogged and i still had the pedal down but the car was not accelerating. When it occurs the exhaust note changes like it's clogged or something to that. This time i let off the gas then hit it again and it didn't happen.

It used to happen from a 10-15mph when i step on it and it wasn't that bad as i would let off the gas and then punch it again and it would be fine.

It never happened before the converter. Is it torque management, or is it something to do with the flow of the converter?

it sounds like the torque converter locked for some reason....

Could a tune help or eliminate this? Is it a sign of a bad converter and that it might not last as long as a properly working converter? If it is locking up on me at mid or WOT runs then why does it just bog? Wouldn't it still accelerate?

no if it locks up at wot, eliminating the slip in the converter keeps the RPM down too low to accelerate hard...you'll more or less be bogging the motor...

If you hit the throttle and it downshifted, but did not accelerate (bogged down) then this is not the TC. Even if it is locked up it will still accelerate, but not very quickly. Your problem lies elsewhere, not in the TC.

Yes it downshifted and it pulled hard until the bogging down occured. When it happens it might still accelerate slightly but it feels like it isn't gaining speed at all. Also when it happenes the exhaust note seems to sound like the RPMs are stuck in one place.

Hey dude, had this happen to me in my truck. Check the air intake around the TB forward. Sounds like its sucking air from somewhere south of the MAF sensor and north of the TB. My truck did this and I thought I had a problem w/ my catalytic converters but it turned out to be the clamp had come lose around my homemade CAI at the TB...Zed

unmetered air= lean= knock retard =slow acceleration and the "feeling" of it sticking at that rpm...

So could it be knock retard? I'll check out the intake tomorrow. It basically feels like the engine was cut off and lost all power. Also it doesn't happen every time...it's sporadic.

This sounds very like a problem I've been chasing
for a while. It hits me every so often, usually seems
like when I've "fluttered" the pedal (like accelerating
hard in traffic, having to back out & get into it again,
it'll hang at a fixed speed and not exit this locked-up
low-power state until I release pedal from WOT.

By the feel of it, it's like the trans is getting "tangled
up" with the down/up/down shift commands and
putting me into an abuse mode. But, I've turned off
all (available) abuse modes with HPTuners and still
got into it the other day. It used to be worse, now
it happens so infrequently that I haven't been able
to "catch it in the act" while the scanner is hooked
up.

Curious how widespread this behavior is, whether
anyone has pinned it down (and eliminated it by
some clear method), etc.
