Default This dyno seem low to anyone else? -TR 230

My buddy made a trip to Thunder Racing this past week and had his 99Z dyno-tuned. He came back with a much better driving/idleing car but I was still disappointed with the numbers. He made 409 rwhp with these mods after tuning:
-Home P&P heads, milled .0030, 10.8 c/r
-TR 230/224, comp 918 springs
-LT FLP's, no cats, cutout before axle
-LS6 Intake
-Home P&P TB
-160 degree thermostat
-SPEC Stage 3 carbon clutch
-Stock rear, 3.73's
-Heavy Chrome 18x10.5 ZO6 rims, 295/35 BFG's

Does this sound about right? I thought 400rwhp was good with stock heads. Someone pretty deep in the LS1 business said that 1pt. in compression is generally worth 15 rwhp once tuned. Personally, that sounds kind of high to me. From what I've heard and seen, about 10rwhp is the norm. Anyway, I was thinking somewhere in the 425rwhp range would have been more appropriate considering his bump in compression, cam, and stock rear. He originally dynoed 315rwhp with lid, cutout, 3.73's and stock 16's. I beleive his base run before tuning was close to 400rwhp.

Tell him to take it to the track.

But yeah, for a H/C car, that does sound kinda low, but take dyno numbers with a grain of salt.

What is the definition of these "home ported" heads? Home porting can often be confused with just hogging out the ports, which can somewhat hurt power more than help.

409 rwhp is not bad, esepcially if the "home ported" heads are stock valved. TR230's dyno 375-380 rwhp in Georgia with stock heads, so 409 rwhp would be respectable.

409rwhp sounds great with that stuff. put on some good heads and who knows what it'd make.

I think that the problem is the home ported heads...unless you have extensive experience and a perfect hand (aka cnc machine ability), porting a head by hand will not do you much good, maybe 5-10 rwhp max or even lose a few hp due to turbulence in the ports.....

i think 409 sounds good , whats that work out to at the motor ? like 500+ right ? i think there are a lot of h/c cars with 390 rwhp so i would be pretty happy !!

I agree with the above comments concerning the quality of the home porting of the heads.

Also, I'd imagine there's about an even trade off in power with the raised compression and the size/weight of the wheels.

Yeap. Put some quality heads on that thing and your bud will hit 44x easy.

Let me rephrase and clarify on the heads. They are not 'home' ported. They were actually done by a racing company. They have done hundreds of LS1 heads so they know what they are doing. They only charge $600 for the porting/milling using stock valves and generally show an increase of 17-23rwhp over stock heads and compression.

I think he only paid $450 but even so, you really think $600 at full price is a bad deal for 25rwhp? How much would you gain from stage 2 heads from TEA over stock heads and compression? I doubt it would be 50rwhp if your lucky. Thunder charges $2800 for their stage 2 GTP heads. $2800 for heads/spring set-up and 50rwhp or $900 for heads/spring set-up and 25rwhp. Sounds fair to me. Why do you think its halfassed? Not everyone has the money to do the mods they want. I'm sure he wanted Stage 2 heads but he's already put about 10k in the car after the car itself. Gotta cut corners when you can.

All in all, I do think the overall numbers are a bit low. However, I don't think they are as far off as you might think. Does the car have an ASP pulley, etc?

For what's done to the car I think your buddy's numbers are not not too bad, for someone that had to cut corners. The numbers are not the greatest, but they are not bad.

stock rear end 6 speed car. so the 373s might kill 5 but I left some HP on the A/F didn't have time to finish the tune.

409rwhp is not bad at all. We have a local GTP Stage II heads/TR224 cam, plus all boltons car that dyno 405rwhp after LS1 Edit tuning. Every car is different.

The car is very quick at the track though 11.3 at over 120mph. Dyno does not tell the entire story all the time.

Looks pretty good to me, put the stock wheels pack on and get a pulley and see what happenes. Also what was the weather like when you dynoed.

I would have to agree with Jason and Paul, cutting corners with cylinder heads is just rolling the dice and hoping you don't actually take a loss. I have seen several people on these boards end up wishing they had stayed with stock heads until a reputable set of stage 2s were an option.
