Default What are the symtoms of a broken spring?

I was hearing some kinda weird noise from under my hood. To me it kinda sounds & feels like a broken spring or something. I have the 918's springs with a TSP 231/237 cam only. I was hoping that someone could help me out with what the sytoms of a broken spring are.
Thanks

It only takes about 20 minutes to pull valve covers off, if you suspect it then you should just take quick look.

With your double springs you can break one of them and the other will hold the valve up and hopefully clear, someone else had this problem just a few weeks ago and pulled the valve cover off to find the outside spring was broken.

with the 918's being a single spring I'm sure if one broke you would know it by a god awful noise from the valve being dropped into the combustion chamber.

Sometimes you cant even tell a spring is broken until you pop off the valve covers. I have only heard of this once though.

most definitly would be a valve juggling around on top of a piston

I've broke part of dual spring in SBC and immediately saw a drop in oil pressure.

Just because you break a single spring doesnt mean the motor is going to munch the valve. Back when 941s were about the only option in these motors, my buddy had one break. The motor would NOT idle. We limped the car home and switched the spring and valve seal and it was fine. The valve never made contact with the piston.

Mine started flashing the SES light and started losing power, then lost power drastically. I limped back here to the Ford dealership I work at yesterday. Started making a clacking sound from the engine (usually not a good thing). I heard it from the driver side, pulled the valve cover and found it, walla, broken valve spring. Scoggin Dickey overnighted me one today already (thanks Josh!!!!!)- so we'll be finding out soon if there's any ptv damage. Crossing my fingers. You might have a bent pushrod.

Ya I noticed alot of power loss as well it has a hard time idling. It turns off alot if I dont give it gas even after its been tunned andabout my oil pressure its has dropped also. I should be pulling the valve covers off today to check for any broken springs or bent rod. I'll keep everyone posted
Thanks

When mine broke a valve spring I thought at first that a plug lead had popped off. Bit of a clanking noise, wouldn't idle, no power, kept stalling. Fortunately it happened at low revs and within a short distance of my destination (which also fortunately happened to be my local speed shop).

Great thread, I was wondering what the symptoms would be if I broke a dual since the inner spring still holds the valve up.

Just put a new spring in and mine's fine now!! It wouldn't start either while it was broken once it cut off. I really wish I had the money for Patriot duals though. I think my Manley springs don't like being slapped around by my xer.
