I was in town when I hear some car "goosing" it down the street. I finally see this silver Chevelle with black stripes drive by. I'm sitting at a pizza place with my buddy, so I figure if he comes around again, i'll go after him. Well, about 5 minutes later, he comes back. This time I hop in my car real quick and catch up to him. It sounds pretty good, seems to take off pretty quick, and has some pretty big tires. I get up next to it and it says "396" under the "SS". We mess around a bit in town since we can't get into it until we head out of town. We both head out and get a light...

So the guy gets up next to me, and his buddy in the passenger seat says "from a dig when the light drops" or something like that. I'm like, "sounds good!". The light turns green and we both spin pretty bad. He gets the jump on me though. Now I only had 200 miles on my new clutch at the time, my torque arm mount is shot, and my tranny mount is starting to rip - so I get nasty axle hop when I nail each gear. Anyway, he stays about a half-car ahead of me until I am about halfway through 3rd. I nail 4th and start to pull pretty good, and when i'm about to pass him, he nails the brakes.

We pull into a gas station, and he's all ecstatic. He's all like "You're the only car that's every kept up with me!" I'm just like yeah, it was a good run. I told him my best before exhaust and the clutch was 13.3 @ 107. He said his best is 13.9 @ 104. It seemed faster than that - and it should been! His specs are...

"built" 454 (only runing 9:1 compression)
BG demon carb
who knows what cam and head work
4 speed (i'm assuming the "rock crusher") with a new clutch
full exhaust
3.73's
huge BFG drag radials
He said he dyno'd like 370rwhp and like 420rwtq.

He was pretty cool. He was all about how I can do just about nothing to my car and keep up with his car and how I was gonna pass him - how I can get like 30mpg on the highway, run my a/c, pass emissions, etc. He then says he now wants to go get a silver SS and throw black stripes on to match his car and he wanted to know what year to get. It was kinda weird. He then said the 396 that was in the car ran a bit better than this 454. Then he's like "wow, what do you have to do to run 11's in that?" :jest:

Now i'm sure his car has better than a 13.9 in it - especially with that mph. I'm just guessing he's not the best driver. Nonetheless, it was a sweet race. :)

Clutch is grabbing really well. I'd reccomend a LS6 clutch kit to anyone who only has $350 to spend on a new clutch (remember, that includes a new flywheel). My old setup was pretty bad, and I do have pictures.... just got to put them online.

Nice Kill

I do not read about the 4th gens running older 1st gens and such very often. Just shows how the rides have changed.

Nice run. At least he was cool about the race. I figured when he let off he was gonna try to claim he had you beat. Anyway good race and good story.

Thanks for the clarification..... Brain not functioning very well.

On a personal note I have been waiting to race this lady at work with a 66' Chevelle with a 454 dropped in from a mid 70s truck. Your story gives me hope (tear drops from eye).

Wow, nice run. I never have balls to go out and chase someone for a race.

Was that in State College? Surely there has to be more cars there that can keep up with his Chevelle. Maybe I'll have to make a trip that way some night to play a little.

Yes, State College. This place isn't really big into cars. Most people just care about their BMW's and MB's.

If it's just pulled right from the truck, it's not going to stand a chance. Big blocks can run nutty, but from my experience, they are very few and far between.
