What size tire on 15x4 & 15x5 wheel?
For those who want to run a tire larger than the 165/70, how big of a tire can you run on the 15x4 rim? Would it be easier to step up to a 15x5 rim? What size tire could you put on the larger rim?
any help is appreciated

andy,
on a 5 inch wheel, i think you can run a 215/65/15 on it.
i would get the 4 inch with a 26x4.5 sportsman front. it doesnt sag like the cheap tires do on the front.
btw, no go on sat night, jennifer is staying at home.

Evil,If I'm not mistaken they do not make a 26/4.5/15,but they do make a 26/7.5/15 in the Sportsman tire by Micky Thompson.
They do make a 26/4.5/15 MT ET Front tire, but for the street they are not very safe, but they are 4lbs lighter per tire than the Sportsman 26/7.5/15.
Your brakes(ABS)will feel much better with the Sportsman 26/7.5/15 on a 4.5 rim.
I have had both tires and like the feel of the Sportsman much better, granted they are 8lbs heavier than the ET Fronts, but I just did not feel safe with the ET Fronts flimsy sidewalls on the street.
Just my opinion.

your right, it is a 7.5 that i got. its not much bigger looking than the 4.5 et fronts.
get the 8ply ones, they are made for our weight cars. they are the same thing that hardtop got for his.

They worry about the sidewalls not holding up in turning situations ( exit ramps etc ).If you drive knowing they are on there ( slow turns, watching for pot holes, etc ) you will be OK,just remember it's set up for drag racing not road racing.

Just a quick note for the guys using street tires which i've forgot to mention in previous posts.
You can go with a street tire as some people are using the 165 vw tires. Keep in mind these are NOT rated for the weight limit of our cars in addition to higher speed ratings.
On a 4 inch rim, you may be willing to put the moroso 7.5 inch width as mentioned above or you could go with a 175 sized tire. These aren't meant for a 4 inch rim but will work. They will work just as how the guys using a 165vw tire on their 3.5 inch welds. I don't believe those 165's are meant for a 3.5 inch rim either.
To be safe, I only would use tires which are rated for our cars weight and speeds that we run at. I feel my life (and others) are worth more then a few lbs savings. Just imagine if you had a blowout, killed someone on the street, and an investigation came about that you had the improper speced tires on the fronts and the accident would have been avoided if correct tires were used...I know this is an extreme situation but in my age (34) I seem to think more and more like my parents...lol
Have a good day! Good luck on all your decisions.

My 165r15 Metric radials from Pep Boys are load rated at 1168 lbs and speed rated to 118 mph. I think both ratings are adequate for our cars unless you routinely drive at speeds of over 118 mph with skinnies on the front which is not a wise thing to do anyway IMO.The min recommended wheel for this tire is 4".
Just a note for the street guys with skinnies.Since I run Nitto DR's on the back I went with the VW metric radials over the bias ply front runners by various companies because any vehicle I've driven with a mix of bias & radial ply tires had a very funny & unstable feel to it.
