Hey guys, I'm getting ready to remove the parking brake system tomorrow. So far all I've done is unhooked the cables from the rear brakes. What is the best way to remove the cable from the brake handle? I don't want to remove the handle since I want it all to look stock. Do I have to cut it off? Also, does anyone know the weight on this? Thanks a lot!

You have to crawl under the car and release the two cables from their housing in the driveshaft well. Then lift the console up and the slack in the cables will allow you to pull some cable forward and it just disconnects much like the throttle cable or a motorcycle hand brake. After that you can just drop the cables of the car.

If you're really gung ho, you can pull the rear discs off and remove the PB assembly fron there for about 5 more pounds!

When you saw remove the disks, do you mean remove the part where the cable hooked onto on the brakes? Or the whole rotor? Any possibilities of screwing something up by doing that? Thanks again!

Yes...was referring to the rear rotors. If youy pull them off, you can remove the horseshoes for the parking brake, and the related components.

I've almost got it completely off, just having a little trouble with the one clasp closest to where the cable enters the interior.

Whoah, you haven't done this yet Terry? Thats kinda suprising. Course you wouldn't need to with the big cubes, but us small power guys need all the help we can get.

I removed the handle cable e brake pads etc and it may have been 5-7 lbs at the most.

If your brakes fail <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" /> how will you guys stop? I would like to have something other than downshifting to help me stop. No flame, I'm only wondering.

Most aftermarket racing brakes don't have provisions for an emergency brake anyway, so I don't see the big deal in taking off the stock stuff. Mine went away when I put the Wilwood discs on the rear...

I guess I'm pareanoid of that subject because I lost my brakes one time going down hill in traffic <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" /> I was one driving SOB. Into the opposing lane, up onto the curb and so on. I didn't wreck either. Somehow I got it under control. Funny thing though, in all the panic I didn't use the E-brake till the very end of the wild ride <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

HMMMM now I have something else to think about removing. <img border="0" alt="[jester]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_jest.gif" />

I was actually amazed on the lt1 cars how much heavier the stock brakes are then aftermarkets <img border="0" title="" alt="[Embarrassed]" src="gr_emb.gif" /> Didn't weigh the brakes before getting rid of them though <img border="0" title="" alt="[Sad]" src="gr_sad.gif" />

I'm thinking about drag rear brakes soon. How much weight does !parking brake save? 10#? The rear aerospace brakes save ~20# (mostly rotating). I have the aerospace brakes on the front and love them! No problem with street driving or stopping from 130mph at the track.

After I get this tranny done my next serious car mod is going to be a Ford 9" with alum spool/chunk, and maybe drilled axles. I'd like to get a stronger rear end on the car that is the same weight as stock. It makes sense to do brakes at the same time.

I would say more than 10#'s Terry. The brakes save a ton in the rear cause 1 the backing plates get way lighter and the e brake and stock setup is super heavy. I had my 9" setup for the new backing plates when it was sent as well. I wish i would have weighed the diff but i was more happy about seeing the brakes on the car.

Why not just get a titanium spool, titanium studs, etc.. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" /> terry <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />
