...gotta quick question for you guys. Excepting power adders, is ya'lls criteria pretty much "anything that doesn't touch oil is a bolt-on"?

Thanks for any insight...this "internet ET" thing can be quite entertaining.

Yeah Bob, the closest thing to an engine modification that is allowed is updating to a 2001 or 2002 intake (LS6 intake).

Other than that, something as simple as a valve spring swap is no longer considered stock internals.

I hope that most stock internal guys could say: (as I could while I was one of them) "The valve covers have never been off the motor".

Bob Cosby

Hi F-body man. Hope you're having a good day. I'm here because I like to drag race, I used to have a 99 T/A (http://members.cox.net/rdcosby1/ta/), I enjoy the Forum, and I have quite a few friends here. What's your next question?

Thanks for the compliment, Lane2...and right back at ya...plus a couple of tenths.

Mike...tks. One reason for asking is that I have a bit of a friendly rivaly with some of the guys I mentioned above. I intend to try out a different intake, and wanted an opinion from those that like to do the "stock internal" thing if that would cause problems, in their opinion. I never had internal work done on my LS1, so I don't know if the intake 'touches oil' or not. It does not on a DOHC, hence the attempt at clarification....from the internet ET perspective.

BTW....I'm not using "internet ET" in a bad way. From my perspective, that term is used to describe the ET you flaunt in your internet sig, and was usually obtained under very good conditions.

I thought I already answered this

You upgrading to a '01 intake isn't much different than a '99 Z28 upgrading to a '01 (ZO6)intake.

For those that haven't figured it out.. Bob is keeping his Cobra to our SI rules... He's not content being the fastest Bolt-on Cobra.. he wants to take out a few LS1's in the process

Hey, lay off Bob, you imbecile. He is a cool guy and he is not "your typical Ford owner." ANYONE is welcome on this board.

At any rate, the valve covers have never been off my motor and I have an '01 car, so I don't need an intake swap. I remember back in the day when roller rockers were being debated over. But, I think we decided those were internal motor mods. I think a good rule of thumb would be if you have to take the valve covers off or not.

[EDIT]: Bob, your intake swap would be A-OK in my book.

You, Lane, V6bird and a few others aren't as noisy as Rageman, Wilwaxu, 01-Z, etc.

I actually have had a valve cover off my car....at the 2001 NMRA race, tech wanted to verify legality, so we pulled the passenger-side valve cover, did a P&G, and checked the lift on the cams. Don't think that is a big deal though.

As for what is up my sleeve...I'm having an intake done up, getting full-length headers, a tubular front end, some good shocks and struts (likely QA1's), a T5 with scattershield (ya, I said T5), and perhaps one or two other very minor things. I'm going to rev the **** out of it and see what it'll run. Needs more gear, but 4.56's is my street limit.

Hi Bob.
The way I look at is- You could use a factory intake(untouched)like an 01 if it's better.
But ideally,it would be a stock motor.
ie- no degreeing of the cam(s),no milling or porting of heads, ect.
Untouched from the factory.
But there is no sanctioning body to regulate this.
So,when you go quicker than us,we can say "he has an intake"
and then we all feel better.

The 'Black Cloud' will be Flyin' anyways.

I will be lookin' for you May 31st in Bowling Green

Bob Cosby

LOL...I guess you could say that we are our own "sanctioning body".

The intake will be a stock 99, but it will not be "untouched". My line of reasoning (for whatever it may be worth) is that because no part of the intake touches oil, working it would be no different than cleaning up a throttle body, or the ports on a set of headers, or the mass-air meter, etc.

I wanted a 01, but few are available, and the 99 was a freebee.

Believe it or not, there is no easy way to change cam timing on these cars. That is one issue that is still being worked on by various builders.

Uh....May 31st in Bowling Green? What's going on then?

Hey Bob, whats up. I think as long as the intake isnt touched like ported or polished it would be considered a bolt on. i have the 01 so i didnt have to change to a LS6 intake. Hey Bob, looks like the cobra is flying Very impressive for 281 cubes. An intake swap from another year model is fine. Just nothing that touches oil. I plan on giving the 10's a shot next spring. I'm adding a coan 3sp trans and losing at least another 100-150lbs along with alot of chassis work. I'll keep it internally stock untill my turbo/stroker motor comes together. Good luck !!

I'll probably just have a cam(maybe N2O)maybe heads.
My plans as of now are-
cam(springs ,push rods,ect)
oil pump
timing chain
injectors
fuel pump(for juice later)
tuning
cage
redoing the exhaust

Probably in February.
But plans change.

Joe...I do agree it would be fun to meet up and race. This internet thing is a good distraction, but the track is where its at.

As for the heads...you are correct, I was going to remove them in preparation for the 2003 NMRA F/S season. Valve jobs and milling are legal in that class, and to try and be competitive, I had made the decision to go that route (which, as you correctly point out, would have axed the "stock internal" moniker). However, my new assignment (I'm active USN) prevents me from making enough races to be competitive in the points chase, so I'm going to forgo that route, and do things that will require less time and a less stringent schedule.

LS1 in my Cobra? Would be cool from the factory, but prolly not something I'd do after the fact - though it would be insteresting.

Instead, I rather do something a buddy of mine did...he has a modified 5.4 Navigator motor in his 97 Cobra. The thing idles like a stocker, runs on pump gas, and just made 436 RWHP on a MUSTANG dyno (typically read 20-40 HP lower than a Dynojet) through a stock catback. Neat. Not a cheap thing to do right now though. Perhaps one of these days.

Stock ported Navigator heads, reground navigator cams with a custom profile, and a very custom intake. It has a good set of pistons and good rods, stock crank. If you want to read about the details, here is a link. Be advised that it is probably the longest tech thread the Corral has ever had...

Al Papito is the guy's name. He raced Pro Stock bikes up till a couple of years ago, and knows his way around a 4V motor. Nobody has ever done anything like this before, and he has a LOT of work and money into the project.

Damn...if you guys get together on May 31st in BG, and Mr 01-Z stays "bolt-on" just for the event, and Rageman can drag himself up from Texas, and Larry makes it out there, I just might have to take a day or two's leave and come on out myself.

Perhaps we could have a little shootout inside the race?

hehe. I know 2 or 3 other 11 second bolt-on Cobra's that may or may not want to play. Would be fun.

If this actually materializes, it will be an awesome event! Bob, please tell me you are the fastest N/A bolt-on Cobra out there. I can't handle it if there's anyone faster than you. I'll cry.

LOL. I don't claim to be the fastest anything, However, the guys I'm thinking of are (or at least were) a tick or two behind me. 2 of em have 98's, and one has a 99 with very similar mods to mine.

Oh, excuse me, Bob, what I meant to say was are you the fastest "internet ET" N/A bolt-on Cobra out there? If so, that's good enough for me.

Possible Larry, though I would likely leave from work (Norfolk, CINCLANTFLT area), and can't pin down a time. Also, I will be trailering the car.
