Default largest cam that works well with stock gear

I searched on this but didn't exactly find what I need.

I'm interested in a mild cam for my TA, emissions friendly, daily driver, not hard on valvesprings, etc. I'm looking at a range of cams from 2002 Z06 up to something with a mild lobe, 212 @ .050 duration. How large of a cam can I go before I need to swap rear end gears? Anyone out there with stock rear ratios and mild aftermarket cams? Any input appreciated.

Thanks,

Joe

u could use a 224/114 with stock gears... what do u have now? auto or stick? auto with 2.73's would definately need a converter... any auto should have a converter... if u have a stick, u have 3.42's, which u could use most any cam, u'd just hafta keep it in 4th more often cruising at lower speeds... but since u said mild, i'd stick with a TR220/114, and u should have no problems with a stick, but an auto should have a converter at least, with some tuning...

I started a thread, a few weeks, ago titled "Best Cams w/3.42s." I decided to go with a TR 224/224 112LSA. You want a cam that will start building power quickly.

Do a search for that thread, some good info in it.

Just about anything has to be better than stock cam. Honestly, no joke, my car feels better with the T-rex cam and 3.42's than with the stock cam and 3.42's.

But you can't go wrong with the TR 224, like the others have said. Great cam, should be very streetable, make good tq and HP, and work with 3.42's just fine. Although not optimized for 1/4 mile racing, it will be fine for the goals you stated. And LS1's BEG to be cammed!

Rear gears are not the reason to base your cam on.
Are you A4 or M6?
What kind of emissions in GA? Sniff, visual, OBD II Code recognition?

If emissions are sniff then you need a Stealth I/II or TR224 114+good tune , the 112 has poor chance to pass.

Awesome input, thanks guys.

To answer questions, my car is M6. I'd like to keep the rear gears for highway mpg, driveability, save $$ etc. The emissions test is only the OBDII plug in, no sniff, but I may move so I'd like to have at least a chance of passing a sniff too.

How well does the TR224 idle? Any valvetrain clatter? It sounds like the consensus is the TR224 114 will pass emissions with a tune, so would any camshaft with less duration (and same LSA) have a good chance at passing as well?

Also, predator, I'll check your previous post too.

Keep the info coming, and thanks.

Joe
